That's a contemporary translation, first published in 1993. (Among other things, "grasshoppers" suddenly becomes "ants", if you compare this verse with the same one in the King James version.) The contemporary editor's intention is to modernize all ancient references, which means to translate "circle" into "ball" - when that's not what the Bible's authors believed at the time. The King James version reads differently, at least closer to the original text than the Message translation ever was. Isaiah 40:22 actually promotes a flat-earth view; it doesn't refute it. "He stretches the heavens out like a curtain" across a flat, circular earth - the verse is entirely consistent with a worldview that looked like this.

a) You misunderstand the way scientists use the word "theory". A theory is a framework of facts that scientists use to explain natural phenomena. Remember, the germ theory of disease is also "just" a theory - but that doesn't mean the Biblical explanation of "demons" is more accurate. b) The Bible supports the Flat Earth model. To "not to go beyond what is written" would also mean we should believe that we live on a pancake-shaped Earth with a solid firmament above us. c) Not all scientists are atheists, but good scientists know to trust the evidence more than Scripture. There is just too much evidence out there that supports the Big Bang. Sorry if it contradicts your belief in the Bible, but there it is.

I’m not saying the Big Bang theory is gospel truth. I know that a theory is NOT law, and it can be disproven. I’m a Catholic.

I’m just saying that the Big Bang theory was not meant to replace creationism, in fact it was meant to unite two opposing sides (religion and science). The catholic priest who formulated the theory is named Georges Lemaître, and he formulated it in 1929.

Now the unification purpose of the theory remains to be seen.
