In Matthew 16:18, the true Church founded by Christ was built on Christ Himself as he said “and on this rock I will build My Church”. The rock mentioned here is not Peter but Christ Himself.

18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:18, NKJV)

To understand it better, Apostle Paul clairly stated on his letter to the Colossians that the Church was built up in Christ.

Notice on the quoted verse below, the term “YOU” refers to the Church because this letter of Apostle Paul is for the Church of Christ in Colosse:

6So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. (Colossians 2:6-7, NIV)

And the term “HIM” in above quoted verse refers to Christ because Christ is the Chief Corner stone:

20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. (Ephesians 2:20)

The true Apostle Peter is part of the Church that was built in Christ the Chief Corner Stone.

If the Catholic Church is built in Peter, then it is one of the proofs that the Roman Catholic Church is not really the Church founded by Christ. Remember the true Church of Christ is built in Christ not in Peter.
