I thought, squatters are only those who tried to use a parcel of land which they don’t own. I was once living in a squatter’s area in Metro Manila, renting 1,000 Pesos a room per month.
While reading the news on Yahoo being sued for displaying ads on spywares sites, I found the term TYPOSQUATTER:
Using an example of typosquatting, the suit said that mistyping Expedia as “expedai.com” displayed a site with ads provided by Yahoo, including an ad for Expedia. (link)
From the word itself, we can immediately say that it is another type of CeberSquatting. And according to Word Spy, Typosquatter is:
A person who registers one or more Internet domain names based on the most common typographical errors that a user might commit when entering a company’s registered trademark name (e.g., amazom.com). (link)
Last year, I encountered a typosquatter sites related to Friendster. I thought those sites or domains are paid by Friendster itself to protect those names from owning by other companies. But now I realized, those are the sites of those who wanted to earn from the internet users who mistype the Friendster’s address.
