The Sluggard
Last night, I was playing a Random Bible Verse Reading, when I accidentally opened the Book of Proverbs and read the verse 5 of the Chapter 10 which goes:
5 He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,
but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son. (NIV)
From this verse, it was differentiated the two sons: First is the wise son and the disgraceful son. While reading that verse, I actually got interested on knowing who the disgraceful son is. Anyway, it is already clear from that verse alone, that the disgraceful son is the one who sleeps during harvest. In other words, he is a lazy man… the sluggard:
09How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest- (Proverbs 6:9-10, NIV)
He is the one who wanted nothing but to sleep and get a long rest, which resulted to:
31 thorns had come up everywhere,
the ground was covered with weeds,
and the stone wall was in ruins. (Proverbs 24:31, NIV)
In the other way, sluggard can be identified if his farm or home looks like what has been described above.
Do you think he wanted this to happen? No. He only lacks judgment that’s why these things happened.
30 I went past the field of the sluggard,
past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; (Proverbs 24:30, NIV)
In New King James Version, it is said that the man like this is devoid of understanding:
30 I went by the field of the lazy man,
And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; (Proverbs 24:30, NKJV)
Did you know what comes next if a man will not change himself from being lazy? According to the Bible, poverty will come like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.
34 and poverty will come on you like a bandit
and scarcity like an armed man. (Proverbs 24:34, NIV)
I think, this is what most of the Filipinos have experienced nowadays.
If you are one of those men that are said to be sluggard, God has this advice:
7 “But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; (Job 12:7, NIV)
You should ask the animals and birds and they will tell you what to do, including ants:
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise! (Proverbs 6:6, NIV)
Observed the activities of ants and then according to the Bible, be wise. Put it in your mind that ants although have no commander, they work hard and gather food for them.
7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest. (Proverbs 6:7-8, NIV)
So… Do you want to avoid poverty and scarcity? Observe the ants, reflect, learn and apply what you’ve learn to your life.
