Infernal Affairs revives the theme of undercover cops in Hong Kong cinema. Unlike Infernal Affairs which highlights the battle between such a cop and his counterpart in the police,� On The Edge explores the complex psyche of a former undercover cop returning to his normal duty. Nick Cheung, (Election) takes up this challenging role who is always On the Edge, and brings out the confusion and agony in this character. Francis Ng and Anthony Wong, who works with Nick Cheung again in the long anticipated Johnnie To movie Exiled, offer wonderful supporting performances. Herman Yau’s solid direction is, of course, crucial to this tension-filled crime drama.

Undercover cop Harry (Nick Cheung) resumes duty as an average cop after turning in triad leader Dark (Francis Ng). He then gets partnered with Lung (Anthony Wong) who devotes himself in oppressing triad gangsters, that is, Harry’s former friends. Harry girlfriend Cat (Rain Li) even says he becomes useless when he switches back to a cop. While his former buddies like Mini B (Derek Tsang) finds him a traitor, his police colleagues distrust him and even follows him to wherever he goes. Harry can no longer tolerate the all-sided hostility…

Director Herman Yau have made a lot of small-budget and unpopular movies, but some of his works such as the graphical The Untold Story (also starring Anthony Wong) and the humanitarian From the Queen to the Chief Executive have received much critical acclaim. On The Edge turns out another serious and quality film by Yau.
