It was recently revealed that Ichigo is similar to Kariaya. They are human but not normal human. Itchigo is just like a Bounto.

The only difference of the two is that, Ichigo became one of a Shinigami representative but not actually a Shinigami and gained power of the Shinigami to protect those close to him, while Kariaya, a Bounto who gained the power of Bounto and aimed to end the Bounto and Shinigami through his power.

The Bleach Anime Episode 108 was finished by Itchigo defeating Kariaya and ended up the threat to explode the Jaokaisho. And it was also revealed that the Jaokaisho is not just one but many.
