I know Cisco will sue Apple over iPhone name. Everybody expected this one:
Cisco Systems sued Apple Wednesday over the trademark to the name “”iPhone,” setting up a legal battle between two of Silicon Valley’s biggest companies. (source)
Some experts say that Cisco looks like to win in court because Cisco got the trademark already before Apple introduced their new product with the name Cisco got.
Cisco obtained the iPhone trademark in 2000Š after buying InfoGear. InfoGear had been granted the trademark in 1996. Chandler told the Mercury News that Cisco’s trademark registration on the iPhone brand is “”very broad” and covers a “wide range” of products. (ibid.)
However Apple is also confident to win this battle and it even call the lawsuit silly.
“We think Cisco’s trademark lawsuit is silly,” Ms. Kerris wrote. “We are the first company to ever use the iPhone name for a cell phone, and if Cisco wants to challenge us on it we are very confident we will prevail.” (source)
