After spending the last six years dabbling in horror, Director Park Ki Hyung has found a new home in the big house that is Korean Cinema: violence. Park’s debut Whispering Corridors, the film which arguably jumpstarted the summer horror trend in Korea, left deep impressions on the audience by going beyond simple horror tropes, exploring the world of abusive teachers in female high schools. After Whispering Corridors, Park continued in the horror genre with psycho-thrillers Secret Tears and Acacia, but some felt he had lost his edge. For his new film Gangster High, Park picks up from Whispering Corridors in a sense, featuring two fighting rival all-male high schools. Only this time, the horror is of a different color: he’s not dealing with ghosts, but fists and blood.

After joining together in peculiar fashion, Sang Ho (Jung Kyung Ho of Sorry, I Love You) and his friends form a school gang called Tigers. As expected, soon a rival gang named East High starts ruffling their feathers. But the real fight is not caused simply by being from rival schools: Sang Ho likes young and attractive Su Hee (Jang Hee Jin of APT), but she is East High leader Jong Seok’s ex-girlfriend, or so he says. Bloody and extremely violent (wait for the finale), Gangster High is a return to form for Park Ki Kyung in a market that is more than doing its job when it comes to demystifying violence amongst teens.
