Okuda Eiji has a long and impressive filmography as an actor, and his directing career, though significantly more abbreviated, is no less noteworthy. He garnered much acclaim for his controversial 2001 debut Shoujo - An Adolescent and for 2004’s grand, primal period drama Runin. For this third film, A Long Walk (a.k.a. Nagai Sanpo) starring esteemed veteran actor Ogata Ken, Okuda continues to explore the strange beast that is man, quietly delving into both the ugly and beautiful sides of human nature. Following quite literally A Long Walk undertaken by an elderly, guilt-ridden man and a young, abused girl, the film documents their fragile quest to become complete beings, overcoming the painful memories and unrealized relationships that mar their lives. Winning the Grand Prix at the 2006 Montreal Film Festival, A Long Walk is a lucid, compelling portrait of human experiences and emotions, of all there is to regret and all there is to hope for.

Yasuda Matsutaro (Ogata Ken) has lived a reprehensible life, and, now in his elder years, his past actions pain him as much as those he has hurt. For years he abused his wife and daughter, driving his wife to alcoholism and his daughter to hatred. When his wife passes away, he is left only with suffocating self-loathing and a lifetime of grave mistakes and misgivings. He gives up his home and possessions and moves to a run-down apartment, where his conscience is further racked by the constant sound of his neighbors beating their five-year-old daughter Sachi (Sugiura Hana), a sound he is all too familiar with. In a desperate bid to right wrongs, Yasuda takes off with Sachi, and as the two walk into the night, they begin a journey of recovery and redemption.
