Here in the world that everyone is exploiting things that can be exploited for everyones’ advantage, we’re forced to do things to prevent any abuse.

For example:

Blog or site owners know that the number of backlinks of their site or blog greatly influenced the ranking on the Search Engine results. And the higher the rank of a site or blog on the Search Engine results obviously means more traffic will be directed to that site or blog. Thus, getting backlinks is one of the aims of most of the blog or site owners.

But how to gain links from other sites? Well, there are actually many ways in gaining links from other sites like:

  1. Exchange links. This is where two sites post links to each other. I mean, the first site publish link to the second site, and the second site is also linked to the first site.
  2. Paid Links. It can be done by requesting the webmaster of the certain site or blog to link to a particular site or blog in exchange of money.
  3. Through Link Bait. It’s a technique of getting attention of other bloggers or webmasters which will forced them to link to the site where the bait is applied. Let’s use Jason Calacanis as example to this. If you still remember, just recently Jason made the SEO people react on what he said against them. And actually it’s me who is one of those who reacted which led me to publish link to his blog.
  4. Comment Spamming. This is the easiest way of getting backlinks to our site or blog. It’s an abuse of course on the commenting ability of blogs today. See, most of the blogs open the comment section to their blog’s visitors to let them drop some comments or messages regarding the posts posted on the blog. By spamming comment section of the blog, the site or blog owner save time and money in getting backlinks compared to the first three methods of gaining backlinks.

And to prevent the comment spam, Google invented the “NOFOLLOW” tag:

This is called comment spam, we don’t like it either, and we’ve been testing a new tag that blocks it. From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links won’t get any credit when we rank websites in our search results.

If you’ve noticed, almost all blog flatform are now using the “NOFOLLOW” tag on the comment section as default. And according to Google, links with this tag will not be credited. And I am very much thankful to Google for that.

However, I was convinced by the facts presented by a blogpost, “13 Reasons Why NoFollow Tag Sucks”. Loren Baker called it, “a poor search engine’s solution to conceal its own failure to rank websites appropriately. What’s next, No-linking?”.

I think, I also need to change the NoFollow tag to “FOLLOW” tag on my blog’s comment section to give credits to commenters who added relevant content to the blogposts being commented:

Commenting on a blog post is the same as adding more relevant to that blog post. A thought provoking one sentence post can lead to pages of comments. If someone takes the time to help build your site’s content via posting comments, it is professional courtesy to give them some link love.

Doing this is like encouraging blog reader to post their comments on the blogpost their reading.

But what about the spams? Well, we can manually moderate the comments which are not blocked by the spam-blocker Wordpress plugins like SpamKarma and Akismet.
