People at the Digital Point forums are now talking about Google’s way of ranking it’s own content on its SERP. This is about the YouTube page which is ranked 2nd when searching for “shoe” as shown on the imabe below:

I think it’s silly that youtube pages are starting to pollute the SERPs.

Not very relevant to what people are really looking for when they search for “shoes”, yet it sends more traffic to a Google owned traffic pig thats making money off ad impressions.

hmmm, clean up the index to produce better, relevant results, and diminish revenues on the overpriced golden goose, all be it temporary (youtube that is). OR keep letting those pages pollute the index reducing relevancy only to loose search market share.

For me, I don’t think there’s a problem here. Whether the page is owned by Google or not, its ranking on the Google SER is based on Google’s system of ranking. Of course we know that one of the requirements for a page to be ranked on the higher position at the Google SER is the backlinks. And we can find the number of backlinks to a certain page by just searching “link:pageaddresss.com” at the Google search engines. However, we should also remember that what has been shown is based only on the record at the current datacenter used.

Is there any conspiracy regarding this matter? Well, only Google know about how they rank their own content on the Google SER. There are several reasons that I was thinking why Youtube’s pages sometimes appear on the top position of Google SER:

• It might be based on its standard ranking procedure.
• It might be done to promote their own sites such as Youtube or Google Video, Blogger and others.
• It might be the combination of the two reasons I said above.

And just like what I said already (even posted on the forum), I found no problem about it.
