Not All Blogs Are Parasites
Blogs are parasites? This is how journalists consider blogs because according to them blogs wouldn’t exist without the reporting done by newspaper.
Okay, let’s take the definition of the Wikipedia on what parasite is, just to make it clear what is it really. According to the Wikipedia, parasite is:
A parasite is an organism that lives in or on the living tissue of a host organism at the expense of that host.
So, it’s an organism that lives in a host organism. Then, if we call a blog as parasite of the newspaper, does it mean that blog lives on or depends on the content of newspaper? Well, I think that’s the right thing about a parasitic blog. And it is true that parasitic blog couldn’t exist without the reporting of the newspaper.
But take note… It’s the parasitic blogs only. Remember that not all blogs are parasitic blogs.
Well, it’s true that there are blogs which can be considered as parasites but not all blogs are parasites. Just like when saying, there are scraper blogs that exist but not all existing blogs are scrapers. We can also say that some blogs are spamblog but not all existing blogs are spamblog.
Journalist should not generalize when calling blogs as parasitic medium, because parasitic blogs are just a portion of the whole population of blogs.
How about this blog, is it a parasitic blog?
Okay, I know, I often post comments on certain news that have been reported by the mainstream media or by other blogs that got my interest. And this way of blogging is called by them as parasitism. So what, if I’m doing parasitism!
Does it mean that this blog couldn’t exist without the story told by the mainstram?
No! It might be true that I often do what they called parasitism but it doesn’t mean that because I blog on that way, this blog can’t exist without them.
Just to let you know, any blogs can exist without the mainstream media. That’s the truth. So, stop calling blogs as parasites. We did it not because we’re depending on the story you told through the mainstream, but because it only happens that the story you told got our attention and interest.
Okay, if we can find newspaper stories that have been derived from the stories told by bloggers on thier blogs, does it mean newspapers are parasites?
