Park Kwang Su, the acclaimed director of Chilsoo and Mansoo and Black Republic, returns to the chair for his first feature film since 1999, and the results may surprise those familiar with his works. Departing from the gritty social realism of his earlier titles, Park’s latest film Meet Mr. Daddy focuses on the personal experience, telling a remarkably human and heartwarming story about a thug who experiences an awakening after meeting his young daughter. The versatile Park Shin Yang (The Big Swindle, Lovers in Paris) subtly captures the protagonist’s transformation, exhibiting the skill and charisma that has made him one of Korea’s top and most respected stars. Talented child actress Seo Shin Ae, who recently featured in MBC drama Thank You, is adorable, heart-tugging, and mature beyond her years, holding her own with her veteran co-star. Interestingly, Seo’s role was originally meant to be a boy, but Park suggested changing the character to a girl, as he himself has a young daughter and wanted to bring his experience as a father to the screen.

Small-time gangster Jong Dae (Park Shin Yang) has dreams of making it big, but he’s been living in a trailer, supporting himself through petty crimes. A swindler who talks rough and accomplishes little, he thinks only of himself and is annoyingly particular, being a health food freak who only eats organic vegetables. When Jong Dae lands in prison dead broke, a former lover agrees to bail him out on the condition that he take care of their sickly seven-year-old daughter (Seo Shin Ae) for a month.

2007 has seen a string of films centering around the father figure, including The Show Must Go On, Bunt, My Son, and My Father, and Meet Mr. Daddy offers perhaps the most direct and affecting story. The film transcends its melodramatic trappings with restrained direction, superb acting, and realistic characters.
