Ohwww! What the “H” is this? $1 billion lawsuit against Youtube and Google?
Okay… I think Viacom has the point in filing this lawsuit. They want to protect their rights on their own properties and want to receive shares on Youtube’s earning through their properties uploaded to the Youtube’s servers.
The suit seeks more than $1 billion in damages, as well as an injunction prohibiting Google and YouTube from further copyright infringement. The complaint contends that almost 160,000 unauthorized clips of Viacom’s programming have been available on YouTube and that these clips had been viewed more than 1.5 billion times. (source)
Steve Bryant listed 18 reasons why Google and Youtube are guilty on this lawsuit. But I think $1billion is too much and filing a lawsuit like this can be a stupid step.
It might be true that, as what Viacoms said that, Youtube is a company that earns money by building traffic and selling unlicensed products or even from infringing other people’s properties but just like what I said before, there are other ways to resolve this problem, like letting Youtube to take down all those video clips that Youtube users had uploaded, or to continue creating a deal with Youtube and make use of Youtube’s traffic and free services.
I now understand why Viacom rejected the offers made by Youtube during their previous talks about these video clips. Viacom is not contented to the offers because what they want is a huge amount of money from Youtube.
