Google announced that they’re now improving their policies on logs to protect the users’ privacy:

Just as we continuously work to improve our products, we also work toward having the best privacy practices for our users. This includes designing privacy protections into our products (like Google Talk’s “off the record” feature or Google Desktop’s “pause” and “lock search” controls). This also means providing clear, easy to understand privacy policies that help you make informed decisions about using our services.

From the blogpost they made, we’ll learn that Google really collect information about the users searches including the query, IP address of users, and the cookie details, and that they keep these information (before) as long as they think they’re useful.

So, atleast they admitted and finally realized that keeping those informaton for too long is not really good for their users.  However, they said that they will still keep the logs for 18 to 24 months, and it is still too long.

But, anyway if you think it’s your personal risk when Google keep these information about you, then you can do two options:

  1. Switch to other Search Engines that do not collect and keep users data
  2. Log-out from your Google’s account while doing some Googling. Or for more secure Googling, use random IP when logging in to your Google accounts and do Googling while logged-out.
