Since the acquisition of the Youtube by Google, lot of problems sprouted against Youtube. Some companies ordered Youtube to take down video uploaded by users (This order actually affected our online viewing of Naruto Shippuuden anime). Some of them sue Google for hosting copyrighted videos at Youtube illegally.
Then after these problems, came next is the challenges brought by the new competitor like Joost.
I thought, that would be the end of the Youtube. But Youtube survived by standing firm. As proof, Youtube continue to gain its popularity and traffic. Until one day, Youtube find its first deal with an international broadcaster, the BBC.
But then recently, it was reported that News Corp. and NBC are working together to form another competitor of Youtube that will be soon launched this summer.
News Corporation and NBC Universal will launch the largest Internet video distribution network ever assembled with the most sought-after content from television and film, it was announced today by Jeff Zucker, President and Chief Executive Officer, NBC Universal and Peter Chernin, President and Chief Operating Officer, News Corporation. The video-rich site will debut this summer with thousands of hours of full-length programming, movies and clips, representing premium content from at least a dozen networks and two major film studios.
And take note that it’s not only News Corp and NBC are working with it. These two companies are also dealing with Google’s number 1 competitor in Search Engine business, Yahoo!, and also with other companies such as AOL, MSN, MySpace etc. :
AOL, MSN, MySpace and Yahoo! will be the new site’s initial distribution partners. Their users, who represent 96 percent of the monthly U.S. unique users on the Internet, will have unlimited access to the site’s vast library of content. This media alliance will offer consumers free long- and short-form video and create a compelling platform for advertisers, targeting the rapidly growing audience of online video consumers. Charter advertisers include Cadbury Schweppes, Cisco, Esurance, Intel and General Motors.
I understand why News Corp and NBC made an alliance with other companies as mentioned above. This is to make sure that the new video site will gain more users and visitors out of the users and visitors that those said sites have. Afterall, users and visitors are the most important thing on this kind of business.
But the questions are: Can this new said site really compete with Youtube (which Joost seems failed to do)? How will this new site’s management deal with the copyrighted videos (which became the real problem in Youtube)?
Maybe, this is the real challenge to Youtube… Let’s see!
