How to View the Hidden Files of Worm@W32.Resik Worm?

I receive an email from a co-ERAIANs (Students of the New Era University) asking me how to view the hidden files of the worms.

I read your post on how to How To Remove Worm@W32.Resik From Your PC and Flash Drive and I immediately checked my PC’s regedit and I found the inetsrv entry. But when I checked the Windows system folder, I didn’t find any of the files you mentioned. Is my PC really infected by that worm? How to view the hidden files of that worm?

Before I’ll answer her questions, I want to thank her first for visiting my blog and emailing me about it. And I want to suggest also to easily drop your suggestions, comments and questions here by simply posting it at the comment section of this blog.

Is my PC infected by the W32.Resik worm?

According to you, you found the registry entry for the file INETSRV.EXE. This means that your PC is definitely infected by the W32.Resik worm.  But when you checked the Windows system folder for the existence of files created by this worm, you found nothing.

How to view the hidden files created by the said worm?

Okay… I’m sorry for telling you in my previous post that the files created by this worm can be viewed by just changing the View option of your Windows explorer. Well, if you’re using the Windows ME version, you can actually view the files of this worm by doing that step. But if you’re using the later version of Windows, the hidden files created by this worm can’t be viewed by this method. So, you need to do these steps:

  1.  Open a DOS interface. (Click START, then click RUN and type COMMAND and press ENTER)
  2. On the command prompt (see the image below)

    DOS

type “cd c:\windows\system32\” without quote  and press ENTER (as shown in the image below)

    DOS

  3. Then type “dir inetsrv.* /a” without quote and press ENTER. Then the search result will display like what is shown on the image below:

    DOS

Okay, our search found 1 folder (with <DIR>) and 1 file, “inetsrv.exe”.

That’s how… And you can now view hidden files which can’t be viewed by merely changing the VIEW option of the Windows explorer.
