Privacy International accused Google’s stand on privacy sucks. In an open letter to Google, Privacy International said:
You may be aware that Privacy International yesterday published its first privacy ranking of leading companies operating on the Internet. Google Inc performed very poorly, scoring lowest among the other major companies that we surveyed.
I am confused about this accusation. Let me see your basis of saying this. Well, Mashable pointed two reasons why Google’s privacy sucks:
And why was Google ranked so low (aside from the obvious)? Two reasons listed by Privacy International note Google’s retention of personal information fo an indefinite period of time as well as the company’s records and saved IP addresses, which are kept for up to 2 years with no clear policy on when the data is deleted from the system. While Google is seemingly disturbed by the report having been made public without seeking further explanation directly from the company, it would be easier for the rest of us if Google’s terms were more clear to begin with.
I also read the reaction of Battelle, David Dalka, Alchemy, and tons of other blogs, but I found no problem with how Google deal with the personal information they collected about their user and their users actions.
Actually, I sense something here. Is there any company behind this issue? Actually, I am really thinking something: Is something wrong with Google’s stand on privacy or the Privacy International has something wrong inside them? Danny Sullivan got this question too: “Google Bad On Privacy? Maybe It’s Privacy International’s Report That Sucks.”
While writing this post, I found Matt Cutts’ points:
- Google didn’t leak user queries
- Google didn’t give millions of user queries to the Dept. of Justice
- Google will anonymize query logs
And based on Matt Cutts’ points, those companies that experienced failure to protect users’ privacy are ranked higher than Google.
Then Maybe, there’s really problem with the ranking system.

I’m sorry but Google immediately set out to smear Privacy International. Their big defense isn’t that they don’t do everything they are accused of, it’s that “Hey, look at those guys, they’ve got to be worse right?”
Well here’s a tip, Google, even if they were worse, the accusations against you are still valid and last I checked, you had a LOT more data than your nearest competitors.

well, i agree that Google has more data than its nearest competitors especially with the series of acquisition that Google did. But is this the reason why Google rank the lowest in terms of Privacy?
I am really wondering about that because I tried to search the internet on the basis why they ranked Google like that but didn’t found…
