How to Create SubDomain and install Wordpress through the CPanel?

This article is actually my respond to the question of the blogger behind the Silkenhut’s World blog. Instead of answering the email by an email, I decided to publish it here so that those who are like him wondering how, will also learn. His question is:

I just recently bought a domain plus web hosting and I am still learning the ropes. I noticed that your site is using subdomains such as your Songs Lyrics and Naruto Shippuuden Fan sites.

If you don’t mind, I have some questions regarding subdomains.

For example, if I make a new subdomain in my website, Do I need another installation of a CMS such as wordpress? Could you provide an explanation on how to do so?

Since you are creating subdomain, then I think, you want to create another blog or website on that subdomain.

So for your question, “Do I need another installation of a CMS such as Wordpress?”, my answer is, “Yes!” If you want to create a new blog whether you are using main-domain or subdomains, you also need to install new CMS for that blog. In other words, if you want to build 100 blogs in you hosting account, you also need to install the CMS 100 times.

To make my answer clear, please consider this example.

I have 2 subdomains on my hosting account: 1) songslyrics.selaplana.com; 2) narutoshippuudenfan.selaplana.com. And because I decided to use the Wordpress engine in running the websites under these subdomains, so I installed the Wordpress software into these subdomains separately.

Why do you need to install the Wordpress into each of the subdomains? It is because the Wordpress software available in your hosting account is designed to run a single blog only. Your Wordpress-run blog is like a car with single engine.

Creating SubDomain

Okay, I am assuming that you are already logged-in to your CPanel. And I know that you already know how to enter your CPanel because of the fact that you already have your Silkenhut’s World blog.

Now, find the link “MANAGE SUBDOMAINS” in your CPanel’s home-page. Take a look at the screenshot below, especially the one encircled with red.

CPanel

Now, click that one and you’ll be brought into the page like what is shown below:

CPanel

On the encircled part, type the name you want for your subdomain. For example, you want to create a blog about your “Sex Life”, then you can choose one from the subdomains like:

  1. sexlife
  2. sex-life
  3. sex_life
  4. mysexlife
  5. my-sex-life
  6. my_sex_life
  7. lifeinsex
  8. life-in-sex
  9. life_in_sex
  10. lifensex
  11. life-n-sex
  12. life_n_sex

It’s up to you what you’ll choose. And I want to remind you that space between the words are not accepted. You can use the dash (-) or the underscore (_) to replace the spaces.

Then, click on the ADD button to tell the CPanel to create the subdomain that you entered. If the task is successful, you will then receive the message, “The subdomain, test.selaplana.com has been added.

Installation of Wordpress

I know that you already know how to install the Wordpress software because you already tried it for your Silkenhut’s World blog. However, for the sake of those who don’t know yet, I will still discuss it here.

Now, back to the homepage of the CPanel, look for the icon as shown below:

CPanel

Click on it and wait for the page as shown below will show up.

CPanel

Then click the link “Wordpress”. It was encircled on the image above. On the installation page, fill-up the form. And on the “INSTALL ON DOMAIN” choose the subdomain you created just recently. After filling-up the form, click the INSTALL button. Just read some instruction on the following pages until you finish installing the Wordpress software.

Finish

Well, I think, you have now the idea how. But if you think, the instructions I gave on this article is not clear, please tell me by dropping your comment or by contacting me.

Thank you so much.

Hi there, in my quest for knowledge (hahaha) I scoured the wordpress documentation for an alternative that does not require you to install wordpress separately per blog.
I have written my guide here if you are interested,

@jake – as far as I know, creating a subdomain in your hosting creates a folder located in public_html, that will be the folder of your subdomain.. I dont know if it works the other away around.

@Angel – yup, it is possible. I have two different blogs running from the same wordpress folders. I am also using the same database for both blogs. ^_^

Oh, how timely… My friend evilgeniuses.ca was asking me if I knew the answer to that question… since she has recently been converting her blog content (from her own coded blog CMS) to WordPress… I couldn’t answer her because I’m not very knowledgeable with WP… hehe. Now, I’ll just point her to this article! :)

Okay. actually, you can create first the folder before changing it into sub domain.

for example. I will create first a folder TEST, then after that, I will now proceed to the procedure as stated on my post on how to create subdomain and use TEST as the subdomain.

    thanks for dropping by…

    • SELaplana says:

yes, when installing wordress into a subdomain using fantastico, the subdomain should be empty.

I did not understand why you want to install wordpress in a subdomain that you are currently using.
