10th Birthday of Blogging, and the Philippines Top 100 Blogs

Western Bloggers today are debating about the real start of Blogging and who started it, which was triggered by the Wall Street Journal‘s greetings to all bloggers for the 10th birthday anniversary of blogging.

Happy Blogiversary

t’s been 10 years since the blog was born. Love them or hate them, they’ve roiled presidential campaigns and given everyman a global soapbox. Twelve commentators — including Tom Wolfe, Newt Gingrich, the SEC’s Christopher Cox and actress-turned-blogger Mia Farrow — on what blogs mean to them.

The article at the WSJ is written by Tunku Baradarajan and pointed out that it was Jorn Barger who started blogging which’s also opposed by Duncan Riley.

According to my history of blogging (still No. 3 on Google BTW, and heavily researched at the time) blogging turned 11 on January 10, the date in which the first credited blogger (according to Wikipedia as well) Justin Hall commences writing an online journal with dated daily entries, although each daily post is linked through an index page. On the journal he writes “Some days, before I go to bed, I think about my day, and how it meshed with my life, and I write a little about what learned me.”

In February Dave Winer follows up with a weblog that chronicles the 24 Hours of Democracy Project.

Winer has often claimed that he was the first blogger, I’ve long disagreed but whether it was Hall or Winer is a moot point: both were blogging in 1996, and yet Varadarajan writes this rubbish: …

The said history of Duncan is agreed by Mathew Ingrams. Mathew make it clear that the suppose first blogger according to WSJ is not really the first blogger but the first to coin the term WEBLOG to web logging. Scoble also revealed that Jorn Barger was using the software of Dave Winer in blogging which clearly means, Dave Winer blogged first than Jorn Barger.

So, it will be confusing what to believe now. Is it the history published by WSJ or the history written by Duncan Riley?

Anyway, I want to inform you that my blog is ranked 17th at Ma’am Janette Toral’s Philippines Top 100 Blogs and is also included on her Timeline of Philippine Blogs.
