2004 MBC drama Beauty, a.k.a. Heaven’s Fate and Lotus Fairy, stars top actress Lee Da Hae (My Girl) as a young woman caught between love and fate. This uncommon drama touches on the interesting topic of shamanism, an age-old tradition still readily practiced and followed in modern-day Korea. Shamans are believed to be specially chosen by the spirits; marked with special abilities and illnesses, they are destined to live an outsider’s life, both cursed and blessed. For most people, shamanism is the life of the other and far away from common understanding, but what about for the young women who are called upon to bear this cruel fate? Directed by Lee Jin Young, Beauty presents a touching story of pure love, while challenging perceptions of choice and destiny.

Beautiful graduate student Yoon Cho Won (Lee Da Hae) is a normal young woman at the peak of her life. She is engaged to family friend Jung Soo (Lee Joo Hyun, Sweet Spy), who comes from a wealthy background and just returned from abroad. Everything seems perfect and as it should be for Cho Won until she suddenly falls ill with strange symptoms and visions. It is then that Cho Won learns she is actually the daughter of a shaman, and destined for the same fate herself. In a moment’s time, she loses everything she knows, abandoned by both her fiance and adoptive family. Just as she has lost all hope in life, she encounters Moo Bin (Kim Sung Taek, Fantastic Couple), who helps her find the courage to determine her own fate.
