I was watching the Hopkins versus Wright boxing bout this morning (Philippine Time) and have digested lot of lessons from the under-card fighters fighting inside the ring, and especially from the two great boxing fighters, Hopkins and Wright (Hopkins wins through unanimous decision).
Well, I will not be talking on this post about the fight, but about the idea of portraying a character as you blog.
Boxing champion Hopkins actually portrayed a different character during his entrance as an arrogant and evil boxer. And that’s what also my first impression with him hearing the news on what happened after their weighing session. But then, during the fight, I saw another Hopkins, a much better one.
What I mean is that you as a blogger can actually show a different you, depending on what character you want to portray as a blogger. You can be a mogul even if you’re actually not. You can blog as if you’re idiot even if you’re not. You can even blog as if you’re a celebrity even if you’re actually a strange guy from the strange world.
An Arrogant Blogger
I don’t know if you already knew me before. To let you know, I was already engaged with problogging since 2004 but not as the real SELaplana, but as the Ka Webspy.
The Ka Webspy and the SELaplana characters are very much different. As the Ka Webspy, I was an arrogant blogger blogging about anything but mostly talking about religion, Philippine politics and computer security. I usually attack everyone, even my webhosts. I blog as if I know everything. And I always find not friends but enemies.
Change Character
When I lost my café business and forced to go full-time in problogging last January 2006, I decided to change the character I want to portray as a blogger. I planned everything from January 2006 up to February 2006, and finally applied all the things that had been planned when I started a new blog with a new blogger. This new blog is the blog you are visiting now.
Portray Better Character
Actually, it’s really very hard to portray a character which is different from what you really are.
However if you really want to be like someone, make sure that the character you want to portray will not hinder you to meet other bloggers face to face. Be sure to portray a character that will help lift your name up.

[...] Yes, I should be honest to you because I have to. It can be interesting to blog as if you’re someone, just like what the Fake Steve Jobs did, but it’s hard to maintain a character that is not you. And portraying a different character in blogging is really hard to maintain especially if you did something that might ruin the true-you, just like what happened when I was still blogging as the Ka Webspy.
