Portray Better Character in Blogging
I was watching the Hopkins versus Wright boxing bout this morning (Philippine Time) and have digested lot of lessons from the under-card fighters fighting inside the ring, and especially from the two great boxing fighters, Hopkins and Wright (Hopkins wins through unanimous decision).
Well, I will not be talking on this post about the fight, but about the idea of portraying a character as you blog.
Boxing champion Hopkins actually portrayed a different character during his entrance as an arrogant and evil boxer. And that’s what also my first impression with him hearing the news on what happened after their weighing session. But then, during the fight, I saw another Hopkins, a much better one.
What I mean is that you as a blogger can actually show a different you, depending on what character you want to portray as a blogger. You can be a mogul even if you’re actually not. You can blog as if you’re idiot even if you’re not. You can even blog as if you’re a celebrity even if you’re actually a strange guy from the strange world.
An Arrogant Blogger
I don’t know if you already knew me before. To let you know, I was already engaged with problogging since 2004 but not as the real SELaplana, but as the Ka Webspy.
The Ka Webspy and the SELaplana characters are very much different. As the Ka Webspy, I was an arrogant blogger blogging about anything but mostly talking about religion, Philippine politics and computer security. I usually attack everyone, even my webhosts. I blog as if I know everything. And I always find not friends but enemies.
Change Character
When I lost my café business and forced to go full-time in problogging last January 2006, I decided to change the character I want to portray as a blogger. I planned everything from January 2006 up to February 2006, and finally applied all the things that had been planned when I started a new blog with a new blogger. This new blog is the blog you are visiting now.
Portray Better Character
Actually, it’s really very hard to portray a character which is different from what you really are.
However if you really want to be like someone, make sure that the character you want to portray will not hinder you to meet other bloggers face to face. Be sure to portray a character that will help lift your name up.

Geez man, thank God i didn’t get to know Ka Webspy..
I think i like the SeLaplana better..
To have a different character in blogging, that’s a thought. Parang di ko kaya. And now that you mentioned it, so not all you read pala in blogworld may not be their true self? Hmmm.. scary.
Bro., gusto ko lang itanong paano at saan ko pwedeng ipapalit ung check galing reviewme. First time ko lang po kc makareceive ng check e. I have no idea. I’ll wait for your reply. Tnx a lot.
I don’t think that I’d be ready to go pro-blogging, I’d have to drop my childishness perhaps? Anyway, just want to let you know that I’ve found your blog to be pretty helpful
Eli >>> actually, kaya niyo po gawin yun. For example, you want your reader to think na magaling ka sa isang bagay halimbawa sa Personality Development. So, to act as if you’re the expert on personality development ay madali lang gawin actually, without attending any formal education. Ang gagawin mo lang ay magbasa ng mga books at articles about it. Then yung mga mabasa mo ay siya naman ngayon isusulat mo sa inyong blog.
Reyn >>> you can be a problogger even if your childishness is part of your blogging activities… even in your blogposts. Actually, they define problogger as anyone who is paid to blog. So, as long as you are paid to blog, you’re already a problogger.
Brother Gurb>> Deposit mo lang ang cheke sa bank account mo. May 1 month clearing period ito so, magiging available yan sa account mo with 30 days or less
dollar account po ba or peso? tnx po.
kahit ano bro okay lang. pwedeng peso account pwede ring dollar account. syempre kailangan ung bank account name is similar to the check name. don ka muna lumapit sa info section ng bank sabihin mo ideposit mo check. tapos may kunting interview at examine din nila yan baka galing sa scam….
hi! thanks for your comment on my site. I was reading this article of yours and it seems I may have started on the wrong foot regarding my project. Thanks again for the insights!

Hi Sel,
Interesting article. Great read indeed. Very well done. Actually, the only thing that I can add is for the blogger to add his own “voice”. The written word doesn’t have any ‘tone’ so it would be very difficult, initially, for someone to do that. One of the tips that I can give is for the blogger to write as if talking to someone. Don’t try to “improve upon” the words, just type naturally as if it were a conversation.
Ultimately, with practice (and by reading other blogs daily) you’ll find your own “voice” and “tone”. From there, you can adjust by being in character or by switching to different ones.
I was recently interviewed in BussinessWorld on blogging and I have some tips there on how to improve and start one.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
GM Tristan
