Everyday, I delete some comments posted on this blog. These comments are manually posted by our readers and obviously they are not captured by the Akismet.
Why do I delete comments?
Last August 3, 2007, I disabled the “NOFOLLOW” tag on the links at our comment section which means that this blog is now the target of the webmasters and bloggers who want to earn links. I am not really against to the intentions of those who commented on our posts since sharing backlinks to blogs that has no backlinks yet is one of the things that I want to do as I blog.
However, the way commentator comment on our post is the main reason why I delete other comments posted. These comments obviously go against the comment policy that I mentioned on my previous post. Most of these posts contains links to real porn sites, gambling sites, and fake and spammy sites. I also delete comments of the commentators whose names used are stuffed with keywords.
My comment policy is stated below:
The Do’s:
- You should fill up the “Name Field” with the legitimate name. When I say legitimate name, I mean your real name, your nick name, or the title of your blog.
- On the “URL Field” fill it up with the URL of your blog or the URL of a post on your blog. The URL should be related to the name or title you input at the “Name Field” as stated in number 1.
- Your comment should be relevant to the post you are commenting.
The Don’t’s
- Don’t use any target keywords as your name.
- No PORN sites
- No GAMBLING sites
- No Spammy sites
- No spammy comments. “Nice Site” and similar spammy comments will be deleted or be marked as spam.
Misc.
- You can include links on your comment but will be deleted if it links back to unacceptable sites.
Remember that your comments will not always give advantage to you. Sometimes it hurt you, and your blog’s brand. Darren Rowse enumerated 10 ways that will hurt your blog’s brand:
- Use of Signature. You don’t actually need to put your signature at the bottom or start of your comment because your name serve us your signature already.
- Self Linking. While some of the bloggers don’t allow commentators to post links to the posts on their blogs, I allow my commentators to post 1 to 2 links, but in excess of it is different thing.
- Spammy comments. Comments which only say “Hi!”, “Nice Site”, “Keep it up” and similar comments are considered spam. These kind of comments only annoy other commentators, most especially the owner of the blog.
- Irrelevant comments. There are other commentators who comment based on what they understand on the title of the post and on the first few lines of the story.
- Libelous. For sure, if you will be compromised by your libelous comments.
- “Anonymous Flaming.” Remember that you can’t stay anonymous because your IP address is recorded. So, it is better to reveal your own identity when commenting.
- “Always being first to comment.” It might be good to be the first commentator but if you’re always in a hurry to be the first to post comments, then it will end up annoying other commentators by your irrelevant and trash ideas.
- Posting tons of comments in a post. There’s no problem with posting several comments as long as they answer other comments posted by other commentators. But dominating the thread by a single person is not a good thing already.
- Spammy Names. I already mentioned about this above. But just want to tell you again that stuffing keywords into your name will make other commentators think that you are spammer.
- Comments with no value. Well, just like what Darren Rowse had said, it is related to other points mentioned above.
You need to consider these points to avoid branding you as spammer or anything that will ruin your name. Read the whole post of Darren Rowse here.

I will agree with you of deleting some unuseful or nonsense comments… Since I’m also doit that. Its not the numbers it counts but the value and encouragement it will give to visitors who will read it.
Cheers

nice site… hehehe joke! thanks for the advice on giving comments. i will also delete my nofollow tags but will limit posting comments. maybe i will consider moderating my comments as well and removing my tagboard.
in this case, i can give also love links to other bloggers. of course i hate spams, too. im on blogspot, and there’s no way of identifying IPs. maybe ill stick to moderate comments na lang to filter din those spammy comments. thanks for the advice.

[...] To let you know, one of our visitors recently posted a comment that linked back to “Boy Bastos” site. I checked the site and I found it porny. Just like what other said, the site is not really a porn site but it looks like porny (Porny is my own term that refers to a thing that looks similar to porn sites). And I don’t really want to link back to porny blogs or sites, so I deleted the comment. [...]
