GMail’s Program In Increasing Its Capacity
I thought at first that when Google increased the gmail capacity to certain amount, it was just Google’s way of marketing its new email service so that Yahoo email users will try the gmail or might eventually transfer to Gmail. But, the increase of the capacity seems like part of the Gmail program.
Googlified dug the Gmail code as shown on the image below:
This code was translated into the following information:
- 2912MB by October 11, 2007 midnight Google time
- 4.2GB by the 23rd this month
- 6GB by January 4th next year
- 42GB by the year of 2038
- and 2.70266701 × 1072 TB* by 1/2/3456 7:00
Let’s find out if this is true. So by January 4, 2008 Gmail’s cpacity will be 6GB. But what wonders me is that by 2038, I will be 61 year old by that time, the GMail capacity will be 42Gb. I don’t know if I can witness the Gmail upgrade on that time.
Update: Google confirmed this by announcing that they’re speeding the counter.
In April 2005, we started increasing Gmail storage as part of our “Infinity+1″ storage plan. At that time, we realized we’d never reach infinity, but we promised to keep giving Gmail users more space as we were able. That said, a few of you are using Gmail so much that you’re running out of space, so to make good on our promise, today we’re announcing we are speeding up our counter and giving out more free storage.

That’s a lot of storage. Yahoo has already thrown their storage meter to the waste bin, so to speak. Imagine the data capacity and storage we will need in the years to come. BluRay is coming soon! Yeah baby!
