Money’s Warfare – SBS TV Drama

About the Money War

Moneys WarfareAs soon as it premiered, Money’s Warfare became an instant attraction. First, the SBS drama is about everyone’s favorite topic of conversation – money. Second, it stars Park Shin Yang, the ever-charismatic actor from Lovers in Paris, who started a craze with the charming one-liner “Ae-gee-ya!”, which literally translates as “Baby!” Money’s Warfare easily won the ratings war in its time slot with rave reviews from critics and fans alike, who praised the drama’s unique storyline and superb cast, including Park Jin Hee ( Come Back Soon Ae!), Kim Jung Hwa (Snow White), and Lee Won Jong (Hi, Dharma 2), whose role as a notorious loan shark brought much realism to the drama. Money’s Warfare tackles one of Korea’s biggest problems: debt.

Top-ranked investment banker Geum Na Ra (Park Shin Yang) was living the good life – but he didn’t know his own father was suffering from an insurmountable debt. Na Ra and his girlfriend Cha Yeon (Kim Jung Hwa) attend his sister’s wedding, only to have chaos erupt at the blissful event. The notorious loan shark Ma Dong Po (Lee Won Jong) and his men force Na Ra’s father to sign an organ waiver in lieu of the debt payment, before stuffing the newlyweds’ gratuity into their bags. Ma Dong Po and his gang continue to harass Na Ra at his workplace, and even barge into his house demanding payment, traumatizing Na Ra’s mother, who collapses on the floor. In desperate need of money to pay for his mother’s hospital fees, Na Ra runs to a nearby bank for a loan, only to be flatly denied. Meanwhile, Na Ra’s disgruntled boss takes advantage of Na Ra’s troubles, using them as an excuse to fire him. Enraged and at his wit’s end, Na Ra flips out completely, officially declaring war on all things having to do with money!

Money War Special Round

In an unprecedented move, SBS’s mega-hit drama Money War has extended its lifespan by presenting a bonus round of four episodes featuring new characters in Money War Special Round. Instead of following the increasingly common practice of extending popular drama by tagging a few more episodes to the original story, SBS went against the trend and filmed a bonus round with brand new characters and plot scenarios from the original comic book. The bonus round sees the return of some familiar faces led by Park Shin Yang, though Shin Goo and Park Jin Hee failed to join the second time around due to scheduling conflicts. However, Park Jin Hee does make a brief appearance in the fourth episode playing the ex-secretary of a corrupt congressman.

Joining the new casting lineup is up-and-coming actress Kim Ok Bin (Over the Rainbow) who plays Park’s girlfriend and flamboyant actress Park Hae Mi (Unhindered Highkick) who made a remarkable turn portraying a physically-challenged moneylending tycoon. Focusing on the overall topic of debts and money matters, each of the four episodes is presented under a different theme such as “poetic justice” or “dilemma”. Taking Park’s revenge code out of the equation and instead focusing on Park’s new challenges as an ingenious debt collector, Money War Special Round wrapped up with impressive viewership ratings of over 25%, bringing closure to one of the most highly rated and critically acclaimed dramas of 2007 and paving the way for a new trend in Korean dramas.

Money War Original Sound Track

After the incredible success of Lovers in Paris in 2003, Park Shin Yang focused on films with mixed success, but his return to the small screen promises well: the show recorded ratings close to 30% in just four episodes, an incredible feat in the drama landscape of 2007, when most dramas have a hard time reaching even 20%. Park plays Geum Nara, a private moneylender turning more and more ruthless with time. He enters the life of Seo Ju Hee (Park Jin Hee), who’s trying to put her life back together by marrying a rich man to get rid of her family’s debts. When Nara ruins her plans, she vows to take revenge on him, but then fate plays tricks on them and they fall in love.

Volume 1.5:

Following up the drama’s first original soundtrack, Money’s Warfare 1.5 offers more atmospheric sounds from the drama. The main song in this 10-track release is hip hop maestro Bobby Kim’s “One Year Like One Day” (Track 2), a soulful number about a man’s sorrow as he waits for a woman who has left. The soundtrack also features music from Solomon, a project group formed by SM Entertainment composer Lee Jae Myung and the versatile Ha Kwang Suk, who has worked on the soundtracks for dramas Winter Sonata, Hotelier, and Stained Glass, as well as a number of films and animated works. Their composition “Money’s Warfare Strategy” (Track 3) integrates classical, jazz, rock, and hip hop elements, and leaves a strong impression with its original lyrics and rap.
