I Am SamTough, rebellious, and hip are words that flash across one’s mind upon hearing Yang Dong Geun’s name. His highly acclaimed Ruler of Your Own World earned him devoted fans throughout the country, instantaneously turning the actor into somewhat of a cultural icon - the James Dean of Korea. Naturally, all eyes were on his recent comeback to television. Based on the Japanese comic series Very Private Lesson, I Am Sam sees Yang playing a geeky, straight-arrowed, underqualified high school teacher who takes on a concerned father’s offer to become a live-in tutor for his troublemaking daughter in exchange for one million won! Not a bad deal except this concerned parent is a notorious gangster leader portrayed scrumptiously by Park Jun Gyu (Bravo My Life). Joining the already established cast members are Son Tae Young (Freeze, Sad Movie) and Big Bang’s T.O.P in his debut acting performance. Though I Am Sam had the unfortunate fate of competing against The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince at the same time slot, this refreshingly bubbly comedy draws its own appeals from deftly orchestrating out the bickering romance between Yang and his young student, played charmingly by model-turned-actress, Park Min Young (Unhindered Highkick). With tons of sweet, eyebrow-raising episodes to look forward to, I Am Sam will have the audience laughing in their seats. Yoo Jae Gon (Park Jun Gyu), head of an infamous gangster organization, becomes troubled by the future prospect of his only daughter, Eun Byeol (Park Min Young). The girl refuses to study! Then a sudden struck of fate brings Eun Byeol and doofy-looking high school teacher Yi San (Yang Dong Gyun) together in a somewhat sticky situation. After finding out that Yi San can actually inspire his troublesome daughter to focus on her studies, Jae Gon offers a deal to Yi San: become his daughter’s private tutor in exchange for one million won. The catch is Yi San has to move in with her. And the money? It’s given as security for his own life. Now the fun begins.
