I was a little bit successful last year (2007) in improving my writing style from idiot way of writing into a better one. But I have still a lot of things to improve in my writing.

I was checking my diary book last night on the things I wrote regarding my writing style, and I found  4 things I commented about based on comments and suggestions from my readers and subscribers.

Grammar

Bloggers and visitors whose writing is the same level as mine couldn’t notice the grammatical error in my writing. But those who master proper English words usage especially those who are teaching English language can easily determine the errors I made on my write-ups.

On my previous post, I shared an email sent to us by one of our subscribers telling me to check my grammars and correct usage of terms. It was published at my post, “Criticism Helps Me Grow.”

Spelling

I think, my mistakes in spelling is just my carelessness in checking the article I am writing. I actually tried to avoid using terms that I am not really sure of its spelling and meaning. But then I still found a lot of misspelled words in my articles. Well, I need to follow what Ma’am G.S advised me to do not only in grammar but in spelling too before publishing the article:

… Kindly double check if not, triple check your usage of the English grammar before posting your blog. And your choices of words too. Since you tend to write in English all your thoughts (and experiences) in Filipino thereby translating a concept, an idea, a phrase too literally to a point.

Eye-Catching Article Title

Writing experts are always telling writers to write killer headlines. Well, it doesn’t mean of course that we need to write a headlines that kill the readers. What we need to write is a headline that will really pull the interest of readers to read the whole content of the article.

Just like what Bryan Clark said, headlines should make a promise to deliver useful information to the readers. If the headlines don’t do that, then readers might just leave the blog instantly without reading the whole content. And I am really bad with that. For your information, I spent 30 minutes thinking what title should I used for this article. I composed 3 titles as listed below before getting the title above.

1. What Should I Do to Improve My Writing Skills for 2008
2. Points To Improve My Writing Skills
3. Weaknesses in Writing

And I am not even contented with that title above. I think, it’s not yet eye-catching nor killer-headline because I myself are not interested with it.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engines drive more traffic to our blog. And most of the visitors coming from the search engines results are those who are responsible in sending us money through the Adsense ads published at this blog.  This means, that we need to optimize more our blog for the search engines so that we’ll gain much visitors and much adsense earning.

Actually, I still bad in SEO.  I read a lot of articles about SEO and I already learn some basic ideas on how to top the search result pages of any search engines, especially of Google, but I failed to apply it into this blog.

So, I need to work more hard to gain more skills and knowledge regarding these.
