The Foundation of the Church According to Apostle Paul

Mr. Morales and I don’t have conflict on our belief regarding Christ as the cornerstone of His own church. And this belief is in accordance to the teachings of Apostle Peter on his I Peter 2:4-8:

4As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— 5you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”7Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the capstone,” 8and,
“A stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. (NIV)

But we have different belief on who really is the foundation of the church built by Christ. While Mr. Morales claimed that Peter is the foundation of Church, I also believed on what Apostle Paul taught the members of the true church of Christ that Christ is the only foundation of the church of Christ and no other foundation can be laid except Christ.

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. (I Corinthians 3:11, NIV)

As I understand from Mr. Morales’ emails, it seems that he’s confused on what really the cornerstone is and what really the foundation is. For him, cornerstone and foundation are two different things.

So, to clarify this confusion, I tried to ask the Bible, how cornerstone and foundation relate to each other. Of course, the Bible can’t talk because it’s just a print but the truth that answers our queries is written on it. And this is what I found in the Bible:

16 So this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who trusts will never be dismayed. (Isaiah 28:16,NIV)

According to that verse, God laid a stone in Zion, this stone is a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation. In other words, the cornerstone is used as the foundation.

Now, considering the truth that Christ is the cornerstone, then it is also true that Christ is the foundation.

But Mr. Morales believed that Christ laid Peter as the foundation of His own church? Is it really true?

Well, the teaching of Apostle Paul is clear that no other foundation can be laid except the one that has been laid already who is Christ.

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. (I Corinthians 3:11, NIV)

And we should not forget that when Apostle Paul taught this truth to the members of the true church of Christ, Christ was already in heaven. In other words, Mr. Morales’ belief that Peter was made as visible foundation of the church is not true based on the truth. It directly contracts the teaching of the Apostle Paul.

In the recent email of Mr. Morales to me, he used part of the Apostle Paul’s writing (Ephesians 2:20) in telling me that Peter is really the foundation of the church just like the apostles and prophets are also foundation. Here’s the snippet from verse 19-21 of Ephesians chapter 2:

19Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, 20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. (Ephesians 2:19-21)

Actually, there’s nothing to be surprised of why Mr. Morales used this verse just to prove that Peter is the foundation of the church when in fact the foundation talked by Apostle Paul on this verse is not the apostles and prophets but Christ. The verse 21even clarified that the foundation referred here is Christ by saying, “In HIM the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. (emphasis mine)” Apostle Paul taught that the church of Christ is built on Christ who is also the foundation of the apostles and prophets.

Maybe Mr. Morales is confused on the way it was written in English, so we’ll copy the Tagalog version of this verse:

(Efeso 2:19-21, PBS- Tagalog)

Now, I think it is already clear to Mr. Morales that Peter really has no place to become the foundation of the Church because Christ is the only foundation of the church.

I just wonder why Mr. Morales loves to believe the teachings which contradict the pure teachings of the Apostles. But of course, just like what I said above, I am not surprised if Mr. Morales used the writings of Apostle Paul in backing-up his false belief because Apostle Peter talked about it already on his II Peter 3:16:

16He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. (II Peter 3:16, NIV)

Well, I will just hope that someday, Mr. Morales will learn to believe and follow the teachings of the real apostles for their teachings are the teachings of Christ.
