Ms. J.

I want to remind you again that I am not a doctor, but I will tell you few things about “Hormone Imbalance” based on my knowledge and understanding.

Ask the doctor

Ms. J, you said that the doctor told you that you are experiencing hormonal imbalance. Well, that means that you really went to the doctor and asked him his advice about your problem. Then you already had the chance to ask the doctor about hormone imbalance and the truth about it including its symptoms, causes, and probably the treatment.

I want to remind you that you were paying the doctor PhP150.00 just by consulting him about your health problem. You should make use of that money you’ve paid him by asking information about your health problem. Don’t just be contented if your doctor tell you that you have hormone imbalance. You should ask more info about it so that you’ll know how to handle your health problem.

What is hormonal imbalance

The term hormone imbalance refers to the state wherein female hormones are not in balance situation. Estrogen and Progesterone are female hormones that are involved on this and are normally in well balance.

Usually, medical people call it “Estrogen Dominance.” So, from the term itself we already understand what it means. Estrogen Dominance means, the level of estrogen in women’s body is higher then the progesterone.

How estrogen and progesterone became balance?

Estrogen is the first hormone to exist in womans body after her menstruation. After the ovulation, the progesterone hormone is then produced by the ovary as part of the preparation in case the eggcell will be fertilized by the spermcell. If there will be no fertilization happened, on the last days of the period, both of the hormones will drop which will be resulting to menstruation.

From the term itself “balance”, it means that level of estrogen is equal to the level of progesterone.

How estrogen and progesterone became imbalance?

Just like what I said above, the ovulation triggers the production of the progesterone. In other words, if there will be no ovulation happened, then there will be also no progesterone that will be produced by the ovary. So, only estrogen exist during that period. The ovary might (not really sure) produce progesterone but the level is not balanced with the level of estrogen. This is why, it is called hormone imbalance.

But, the absence of the ovulation in the woman’s cycle is not the only cause of “Hormone Imbalance.” The level of the production of progesterone can be affected by diet or nutrition, stress, and other factors.

It is also a clear sign that your previous sex experience has nothing to do with your hormone imbalance. Take note that hormonal imbalance is normally experienced by women on late 20’s up to 40’s especially during premenopause period.

Symptoms

Remember what I said above that the “hormonal or hormone imbalance” is also called “estrogen dominance”. In other words, what ever the effect of estrogen into the women’s body, then those are the symptoms when a woman experiences the hormone imbalance.

Few of the estrogen’s effect into the women’s body:

  • reduces bone density
  • changes in the formation of breast
  • headache
  • weight gain
  • decrease sex drive
  • irregular menstrual flow
  • high blood pressure
  • facial hair growth
  • hair loss
  • (etc)

Treatment

There is only one solution for you to avoid hormone imbalance. This is to let your body produce needed amount of progesterone.

You better ask your doctor about it. He’s the authority to advice you what to take and what to do.

Now, why is it that when the hormone are balanced, women will not experience those enumerated symptoms?

Actually, the effect of progesterone to the body of women is the opposite to the effect of the estrogen. For example, if estrogen causes weight gains, progesterone on the other hand utilizes the energy or fat of women’s body. If estrogen lower the sex drive of women,  progesterone on the other hand increases the sex drive of the women.

So if you are a woman and has stronger sex drive (malibog, uwagan, oragon :-) ) then it surely means that your progesterone level is high.

I have one tip to husbands whose wife has no interest on sex…. ask the doctor what should you do to increase the progesterone level of your wife. Just make sure that the progesterone level is in normal, otherwise you’ll loss your energy coping up the sexual needs of your wife.

yes. there is a big chance that you will not get pregnant especially if the cause of your hormone imbalance is the ovulation. Remember that only during the ovulation when eggcell will be released from the ovaries. So when there is no ovulation happened then there is no eggcell that should be fertilized by spermcell.

i have hormonal imbalances too and have been experiencing irregularities in my menses since it started. since im planning to join a body building contest later this year, i need to have anabolic steroid (testosterone) injections. how would this aggravate my condition and what could it possibly do to the physiologic cyst in my left ovary?

i am not a doctor, but in a way, i am very familiar with a different kind of hormonal imbalance (Cushing’s Syndrome) which i was diagnosed of having about 3 years ago. actually, there are many kinds of hormones produced in our body. there are different symptoms and effects in our body depending on what kind of hormonal imbalance one is having. its better that you talk to or see an endocrinologist and not a general practisioner doctor only. good luck!
