Smart Bro Prepaid

I already got an unlimited internet connection from the Smart Bro Plan 999 but I think, I need to purchase another one from the Smart Bro. But this time, I don’t need a new Plan 999 of Smart Bro internet but the Smart Bro Prepaid internet.

I really need the Smart Bro Prepaid especially this 3rd week of April 2008. I will visit my mom and my sisters in my home town in Surigao del Sur. Probably, I will stay there for 1 week. And after that my girlfriend and I will go to her hometown in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte and do some preparation for the upcoming wedding. These two towns I mentioned have no internet cafe and I can only use the Smart Bro wireless internet there but not the Plan 999 not even the Plan 799.

You see, the Smart Bro plan 999 needs an external antenna, so it’ not the type of internet connection that a traveler needs. But I am not planning to get the Smart Bro plan 799 because I just hate to pay monthly bills of a service that I seldom use. Smart Bro Prepaid is the best one.

Based on what I knew, anyone with the Smart Bro Prepaid USB modem can access the internet as long as there’s a PC and the SMART signal. The internet connection will be faster if you’re in the area where SMART 3G is offered otherwise it’s a little bit slower because you’ll be using the GPRS system of SMART.

What you need to do is to visit the Smart Wireless Center and purchase a Smart Bro USB Modem along with the Smart Bro SIM Card. I think, you’ll spend PhP4,500.00 for the Smart Bro USB modem and SIM but you have PhP30.00 worth of free internet or equivalent to 1 and 1/2 hours.

The loading system of the Smart Bro Prepaid is similar to when loading cellphone loads. You can use the Smart Bro Prepaid Card or just go to the Smart Bro retailer and buy loads from them.

The only problem is, SMART charges our internet use per 30 minutes block. What I mean is, even if you only use 10 minutes, Smart will charge you PhP10. If you are connected for 31 minutes, then Smart will charge you PhP20.00 because the 1 minute excess is already counted as 1 30-minutes block.

  1. I think the algorithm of smart bro prepaid must be changed. Imagine, you are forced to pay something you did not use.. I think, they should change their tracking system and make the charges per minute not per 30-minute-range..

  2. I wonder if this works on a place where 3G is not supported. It is like PLDT WDSL?

As for the pricing, I think P10 per 30minutes is already cost-effective but if they lower it more, the better. Take note that they have a different market for this product. Probably, it’s for those people who can’t be serviced by SMARTBro(fixed wireless) but has cellphone signal. Primarily, these are the people who uses their cellphone to connect to the internet either as a modem or surfing through the phone itself.

  3. Anybody has an idea on the speed between Smartbro prepaid versus the Smart Cellphone used as modem? I am using a Sony Ericsson P1i. Both have the same charges at P10 per 30 minutes. But I need to know the speed of both.

  4. hmmm, I didn’t know Smart Bro has prepaid. I’m going away for a week as well so this is something I really have to think about. Thanks for the tip!

  5. I’m using Smart Bro Prepaid. It’s fast and reliable. As long as there’s a smart signal, you can browse and surf the net. It’s faster if you use smart bro rather than your cellphone since it’s a dedicated device for data. Speeds goes up to more than 384 kbps at times. =)

  6. I would like to ask:are there two kinds of CD included one for the Apple computer and other one for the Windows PC, Ihappen to get the apple PC so I was unable to load the software in my PC.
Or do I have to specify to the Smart office where I got the kit to give me instead the Windows CD.

  7. i think this is similar with the 3g service of smart. i’ve encountered problems recently using mobile internet of smart. based on their promo, it’s only 10 pesos per 30 minutes. but under mysterious circumstances, my load for instance i load up 100 pesos, WIPED OUT after 5 or 10 minutes!!. i sent email to customer service but they could not explained this.

i tried loading up 15 or 30 pesos on my cellphone and still same problem. my load used up ALL OF THEM BEFORE REACHING 30 MINUTES. this is a highway robbery.

so before i jumped into this smart bro prepaid, i need your feedback if you encounter the same problem.

  8. @Bohol

I called their customer service in smart to make sure I have internet if I’m using GPRS. After talking to three CSR (two of them doesn’t understand a thing), I finally got my answer….

The speed for GPRS connection for smart bro prepaid is up to 171 kbps. The answer is a little bit odd as I’m not really familiar with 171 kbps. But from my understanding, the GPRS will most likely give you a good dial-up connection which is up to 56kbps i think.

But if the CSR of smart is right, by God a GPRS connection looks nice.

  9. I just sorted out the CD problem and that disk I now realize is only good if you are an APPLE PC user, otherwise you just have to plug in the USB modem and from there configure the connection following the given direction.
On my first few days of trial in the 3g Are the download speed ranges from 357 to 468 even reaching 500 occasionally , that was in Imus Cavite area. Then after a few days of good performance it just deteriorated that it was always either in EDGE or GPRS and seldom in 3G.
Now they have a program called the Quick Fix but the problem is unless you are a plan holder you don’t have any idea what is your service and activation number so its useless.
If anybody have some tweaks how to use this kind of software without the need of activation(BTW the activation requires information that are only available to plan holders/ with contract,) please let me know.

I have compared the performance with the 3G celfone modem, the latter is more flexible as if the signal weak you can change the network setting from 3G to GPRS and you are still connected.Meanwhile the Smart Bro isdifficult to tweak as the network setting is fixed to 3G. Therefore most of the time even the download speed just hovers around 5-30 kbps,,,
Then you are the mercy of poor speed.
Therefore be wary of this lousy gadget!( SMART BRO PREPAID),
Therefore for those guys who are planning to get the Smart Bro prepaid, save your money for a good 3Gphone( preferably a NOKIA and you have more flexibility than the SmartBro prepaid as well as multiple uses too.

  11. Thanks for the comments…. I’m really planning to get this one… But before buying one, i need to read more comments both constructive and destructive. I worried becuz since its thru a mobile phone there would still be a great difference between using a real PC and a mobile phone. Issues like web caching, signal traffic, QoS(strong connection, no DCs), security, uncontrolled interferences, like bad weather, signal coverage, etc. etc. The most important thing is, can it handle video/audio streaming or large file torrent downloads? I mean “384 kbps” is more than enough for it… but is it reliable? Thnx in advance.

  12. hi im planing to get Smart Bro Prepaid, i have a 3Gservice now where i live in ireland(EIRE), but will be working for 6 months in San Agustin, Romblon..starting jan 09, does anyone know if the service there what it’s like >??? Or should i have a contract service which would give me a better deal and connection speed….

    [email protected]

    salamat !!!!

  13. yeah i agree i don’t know if this was the game plan of smart to first satisfy us with speed at the first week of buying this what they so called innovation haha!! because to my experience the first week was yeah alright its worth it,,, but on the second week of using this fu****** gadget it was hell
even i have a full 3G connection at my location it still disconnecting what is annoying is that the modem (gadget) says it was still connected but if you try to open a web page can’t open it anymore and if your on your yahoo messenger it log offs automatically meaning your disconnected right … so why the gadget still says your connected???? .(innovation) huh…… so if you experience that if you want to connect again on the web you have to disconnect the gadget then connect it again meaning they gonna eat your 10 pesos because of the block charges 30 mins. 10 pesos.. so how if you disconnect every 7 mins. they gonna eat so much penny from you. “SMART” isnt it…

and also this one there are times if you will visit a site this note suddenly appear either “NOT AUTHENTICATE” or “icdnobalance” again if you experience that it means your disconnected… how come i load 200 pesos just 5 mins of browsing “no balance” well actually i experince also that in my SMART cellphone before ill using my phone for browsing using also 3G the only different is the note “insufficient balance pls reload ek ek ek” though i have sufficient balance ( i will not browse the web if i know i dont have sufficient balance SMART “idiot”) so guys to those who plan to buy this thing its a NO NO…. better just get plan DSL its much better than this ………

  14. Well They have their golden moments, in fact I was able to surf at HSDPA speed which reaches beyond 500kbps . The actual download speed was 70 kbps. Lately they area having problem with their connection and they became a bit more polite in their comments supposing the service is not optimal. Still its crappy that even at 3G the speed just hovers at 30-60 kbps.
Its good to have a back up such as cell fone modem and I can surf the internet whenever the their modem fails.
I just found out that the cell foneis more reliable than their Smart Bro modem.

  15. again regarding the download speed when it comes to torrent well it depends on the site your downloading,, on my experience using this smart bro prepaid you can’t count on the speed publish,, its like dial up only 5kbps the highest is 10kbps,,,, much better if you will use this thing for downloading search for an url link not the torrent one.. and use flashget for downloading incase it disconnect you can resume once you connected again without starting all over again.. and it has like a throttle which can boost your downloading ….a simple tip from me because we can rely on this f******* gadget… SMART INNOVATION or SMART REHABILITATION dont know >:/

  16. I don’t think that this prepaid modem is suitable to torrent use… maybe as leecher, but a seeder? You cannot remain online forever with this type of internet connection.
A broadband landline is the best for such P2P Connection.
Recently the smart modem is bogged down with inconsistent connection. Most of the time now its GPRS and EDGE. No more 3G.. The cellfone modem prepaid via smart buddy is more reliable and still able to surf at 300-400 kpbs in my place.

  17. bakit ganun loaded naman ako laging icdnobalance wat’s the bug behind it so please give priority to this concern marami magagalit na subscriber sa gadget nyo!!!

  18. hi guys,

here’s a tip my dad gave me when I was in the mountains with him:

When you have a problem regarding the “access denied” in google or other browsers, restart your computer immediately without unplugging or closing the modem.

I had that problem but when I restarted the PC, there are no records of my latest transaction which wasn’t used.

    Hope this helps

  19. @darkangel well we have the same problem the “icdnobalance” thing and as i wrote this comment maybe bout 6 to 7 times i ask them what is it and why the heck it appears thought i have a sufficient balance… you know whats funny about it if you ask them that they will just said that they will make a report about my concern hahaha!!!!!! “always there answer” and im sick and tired of it…. even there what so called technical assistant dont have knowledge and they didnt even know that error exist “holycow” and i have a latest headache on this f******* gadget well its about the speed i just notice it few days back… i thought everything was ok because my connection doesnt cut anymore and the error icdnobalance doesnt appear then ill just found out that my speed is just 12.6kbps sometimes 44.3 and the highest is 66.9kbps heres the website where i checked it http://www.2wire.com…so the question is where is the 7x faster than dial up…. ??????????? maybe smart have some error regarding it hehe!!!!!!!! it should be 0.7x faster than dial up…. ill buy this thing because i want a fast and realible connection now im just thinking to smash this thing infront of them to show them how much im disappointed with there f********* puppy….. im willing to sacrifice my 4,500 for it… anyway i have my dial up which have the same speed as the smartbro….
P.S maybe some of you will recommend me just get a PLDT or any DSL plan,,, well i know it i just dont like it for now and i have my own personal reason why …..

  20. this sucks,.masyad0ng mabagal.,connection’s crawling as slow as a snail.,im located here in cebu.,i didn’t thought that even in a major area, this gadget wouldnt work that efficient.,f*ck tlaga,.just have wasted 4500 for this crap..(‘o’)

  21. I don’t know where you are but in the Imus Dasmarinas Cavite I am able to surf/download files at 500-600kbps( warp speed for wireless 3g).
My normal speed is just around 387 kbps

  22. Kelogs where are you located?
This facility had its occasionally slow moments, but its not permanent. BTW I am not a spokeperson of Smart bro and in fact I have berated their customers service many times in the past.
My current experience with my Smart Bro modem is improving and in fact better than the Smart 3G cellfone.
With the phone I can only surf at 3G while with the Smart Bro prepaid modem I can surf and download at HSDPA speed. In fact I have used some tools to determine the actual speed.
    Using this facility
    http://broadbandreports.com/tools
    Here are my latest results
    http://www.dslreports.com/tweakr/block:365eae4?service=wireless&speed=387&os=winXP&via=normal
Please try to check yours and see..

  23. Recently I bought one of this kind of Modem ( SmartBro prepaid kit)..My location is at Javalera,Cavite (near Gateway Business Park). My connection is at maximum 7.2Mbps HSDPA.
This is quite fast for wireless modem….but the problem is…I am frequently disconnected for every one hour or worst every 30 minute even though i have sufficient amount of load & the 3G signal is 4 bar…Is this normal????

  24. Bitoy , I think you better contact Smart Center nearest to you for your problem.
    Or write their customer service:
[email protected] and ask them how you’re cut from internet connection regularly.

  25. Roy, thanks for the advice…

I was informed by my officemate that during that time I’m using my Modem..the smart communication services encounter some technical problem..also them, they encounter frequent disconnection during that time..

right now I am enjoying my smartbo usage…
base on my personnal experience..it is better that conventional 3G cp. (^_^)

  26. Prepaid o postpaid man ang gamitin mo, Smart’s? Internet service sucks big time, theirs is 7x SLOWER than dial-up. Tapos sa probinsya mo pa balak gamitin. Kung hindi mo pa nabibili yang crap modem na yan, mag-isip ka muna a million times. Masasayang lang ang pera mo… I’d rather that you use other ISP. And huwag kang maniwala sa ‘warp speed’ kuno, pakana lang yan ng mga agent ng Smart, sinubukan ko na yan sa sinasabi nilang Imus at Javalera, Cavite area kasi taga Dasmarinas, Cavite ako… It’s a big HOAX.

  27. Berto, I am also in the vicinity of Imus Dasmarinas and Smart is suffering from slow speed and spontaneous disconnection which I have tried sort out with them. In fact they are regularly communicating with me regarding the status of the problem.
Why don’t you give your share of communicating your problems to them directly ?

  28. Hi guys,

I am in an area in Iloilo where I only have GPRS. Since the speed is very, very slow (average is 10kbps or even lower), I decided to use smaller websites.

Instead of regular websites, I use the mobile version of websites such as m.google.com or m.yahoo.com.

It’s not the same but it does help in simple communication.

  29. Well,,it seems the smart bro modem prepaid performance has gone back to normal in my area in Imus-Dasmarinas after two weeks of sloppy connection.
Its time to enjoy surfing and downloading at 3G and occasionally HSDPA speed.

  30. pls help.. what shall i do my smartbro wireless prepaid cannot connect to my laptop, i used once, itried again it says connection was terminated because the remote computer did not respond in timely manner.. pls advice me

  31. Leo, you should bring your smarbro modem and your laptop together to the nearest Smart Center and ask their customers service to configure your laptop or to help you use the modem properly. Good luck!

  32. You guys are both borring… there is alot of alternative ways to access internet with out having those haming devices and pay for it… I can access internet on my pc and even on my cp w/o those things that you have all mentioned.

    My Tools:
    Bluetooth
    CP
    Laptop

Viola! Unlimited Internet w/o monthly hassle.. anytime and anywhere.

    Awakening.
    Budz3510

  33. Budzz3510 , don’t show your smart ass here as I own also the latest HSDPA/3G CP, before I bought the Smart modem.
I am gonna tell you that this modem when properly configured and your are near a good location you can reach internet speed that you will never be unable to attain with your Cellfone.!

  34. Kaye, the essence of good Smart Modem Internet connection is:
    Location and configuration.
Location if you are within the vicinity of the Smart Cel station .
Then you configure your Smart Modem network settings to Manual instead of Automatic, and select the 3G instead of the 2G.
Then when done connect to the internet.

  35. what i can say about smart broadband internet using Wi-fi… so disgusting… surfing ok naman… syempre surfing lang eh… but when it comes to downloading, uploading… dun mo madedetect kung gaano kabagal internet connection nyo… aba 3mins video in YouTube 20 mins ko iniintay matapos yung progessbar, how come pa ang 30mins? hrs ang iintayin ko paramatapos… dasmariñas cavite location ko… and one time i called their Customer Service Representative bah may pagkabastos “no professionalism”… all they said are not valid for me to have a low speed internet connection, sus 92kbps ang natatangap ko… does it help me? what do you expect eh diba panget ang services ng smart… that’s that fact… kaiinis talaga now I LEARNED… all i can do is to wait for the end of my contract… Di na makakaulit sakin yang smart na yan i swear… And all their product di ko tatangkilikin… Lots of anomalies and all they can do is to fool people on their gigantic ads… Dah!…

  36. Sad to say that those prepaid kit still need a 3g signal just to fit ur eagerness to access site. Anyway i still have solution… See u again smart pipol! Hehehe

  37. Hi hickey! Im a celfon lover, i know what type of phone para maka access nang mabilis dito sa net.. Di porke nk 3g ka mabilis kana. 3g rin phone ko pero i have to change my network and turn Onto GSM networt in order to speedup my access.. Thats the truth.. I have a lot of 3rd party browser application on maphone.. Operamini 2.06, 3.1, 3.12, 4.2 multi server, 4.2 all moded by me. Ucweb, boltbrowser, netfront and ie. The speed of accessing net and quality is not base on what kind of unit u have, but how smart you are. U must know a lot of live online web browser, proxy server and port to speedup ur access and download the file like movies,mp3, appz..etc.. But now u can only use 3g signal for streaming like watching movies to avoid buffering…
