Blog’s Downtime, Not at all Time a Server Problem
I admit that my blog (this blog) experience downtime at least once a week just like what Bendz said on his comment:
Your blog goes down at least once a week and sometimes, I get a phishing site alarm when I log in here.
I’m sorry for this. But I just want to make it clear that not all the downtimes experienced by this blog are caused by server’s problem. Most of the time the downtimes are due to the problem of this blog.
You see, I bought a hosting account (reseller hosting) from a Filipino webhost. And almost all Filipino webhosts that I knew limit all their clients site to use up to 80% of server’s resources. Once a site exceeds the limit, it will automatically be suspended. And then visitors will receive a message which says “Database Connection Error” or “The site is temporarily suspended”.
Currently, our blog receives more or less 2,000 visitors a day. And it’s already considered a huge traffic which sometimes bring my blog to the limit. That’s why you sometimes failed to log-in to this blog.
Of course, I am aware that there are lots of webhosts (foreign or non-Filipino webhosts) that are better than my provider. However, there are reasons why I prefer to use the Filipino webhosting services than those owned by non-Filipino company.
And I want to let you know that since 1999 I already experienced 5 Filipino webhosts. But among these 5 webhosts, only 2 of them are considered by me as better webhost in terms of Support and Uptimes. And they are currently my webhosts that are hosting my current blogs and websites: Ploghost.Com and Nokiahost.Com.
What about the other 3 webhosts?
Well, those 3 other webhosts were good only when my site receive few visitors a day (100 unique visitors or lower). But when the traffic increased to more than 500 visitors a day, my site went down and I received a notice from the webhost that my site was suspended due to the violation on the webhost’s terms and condition that my site experienced. And the worst thing is: they simply abandoned me… I couldn’t reach them in phone, in email and even their offices were closed.
Need a Dedicated Server
I understand that time will come that I will really need to upgrade my webhosting account from shared to dedicated. Remember that one of my dreams is to own a site that will cater a million visitors a day. And I am always working hard to reach that dream.
Just like what I said, this blog has more or less 2,000 visitors a day already. I am still too far from my dream but I know, I will successfully reach that dream.
And I understand also that to minimize the downtimes due to the limitation set by the webhost to all accounts under the shared hosting, I must upgrade my account to dedicated one.
But the problem is, dedicated server is too much expensive. It’s true that I am earning an average (rough estimate) of $500 per month but it is my earning in all of my blogs including those that are hosted by other webhost. And besides, an earning of $500 a month is still the gross income.
Actually, it’s my current problem too.

I wonder if it’s really productive and interesting to read about problems in the blog.
hmmm yeah i understand… thanks… but we might learn lessons from talks like this
I am also looking for a webhost, because I am still in a free hosting like blogger. They say that they prefer these Filipino-owned hosting services because of the support, they are much quicker than the foreign-owned hosting services. Any other web hosting companies that you are considering?
Dude i can relate… 3 web host narin akung pa lipatlipat since last year… my MIS head (boss ko) he checked my visitors and impressions and he advice me na ur vistor endi nakakayanin ng shared server dapat u need a VPS.. You can get namas murang VPS sa pinag kukunan ko… yung Boss ko may ari.. check it here.. kuha kalang ng basic plan den contact the admin for VPS application…
Thanks po for dropping your thoughts here.
EntrepreNar @ well I am using the space of Ploghost.Com and NokiaHost.Com. I don’t know if there are new ones that are better than these two.
Clyde @ k thanks for the tip… i will check their services ….
I’m enjoying Holdfire.net but still has plans of moving to Bluehost once I get my EON and have my paypal confirmed.
I suggest ixWebhosting.com.. It’s a foreign host but you can always chat to the customer service anytime you want.. Besides, the hosting is cheap (considering it’s one of the top 10 hosts worldwide..).. I also got some problems with them but their too swift to response whenever I raise the errors through chat..
would you recommend Philhosting.net???
I’m planning to purchase a .com domain through that webhost.
I am using foreign webhosting. Maybe filipino web hosting companies can learn from their foreign counterparts too. Its all about value added services. I am using iPower (which according to bendz – sucks, hehe). Bendz, kalit man ug kusog ang loading sa iPower. kantyawan man gud nimo.
My blog is using iPower but I am planning to transfer it to Bluehost soon (already purchased a webhosting account too). Di ko lang kasi maisip, hirap pala mag transfer ng domain lalo na blog.
I am currently hosted by http://webhostingbuzz.com. They provide a huge space of 300 GB with decent bandwidth limit. However, I also experience suspension (twice already) because of CPU resource abuse. My site gets around 1000 visitors per day or more and most hosts I inquire to suggests that I switch to a semi dedicated server or a VPS. But my host was kind enough to upgrade my site to a high-resource server for free. But I think this will only be for the time being. I know that I have to get a VPS so I can no longer experience site suspension.
This is why you should purchase a dedicated server and host your own sites on them. I have server hosted with Server Intellect and I resell space on my server to friends and family to offset the price of a dedicated server. Because it is manged I don’t have to worry to much about critical updates keep the box running perfect, they help me. Also if you do get hammered by digg, because your on a dedicated server your bandwidth and server will be able to handle the massive amount of traffic. No need to worry about your host shutting you down because your site is causing a resource issues to other clients.
I found this blog down for 2 or 3 days due to database error. I think Jason is right. Handling such a impressive traffic needs a dedicated server to handle. The downside however is the cost that will bloat to at least 1200%. But if the site is well compensated, I think $120 or so taken from $1000 of monthly income is a wise move. The other thing is, dedicated server will open lot of opportunities to your online experience.
