How to pick the right Webhost for your Blog?

In my previous article, “How to choose the Right Domain for Your Blog“, I already told you not to use the free blog hosts because you’ll be having the hard time making money with your blog if it is hosted by those free hosts. If you really want to maximize your income from your blog, you need to buy your own domain and a hosting account.

To make it clear here’s the list of advantages and disadvantages of free webhosts:

Advantages of Free Webhost:

  1. Free Webhost is of course free. You don’t have to pay anything.
  2. Few free Webhosts offers unlimited bandwidth. Whether your blog will receive huge traffic or eat up huge bandwidth, your blog remains running.
  3. Blogs are networked. Most of the free webhost has their homepage where the blogs recently featured and recently created are being featured. Other Free Webhost offers a navigation bar which is placed at the top most area of the blogs and one of the links on this navigation bar is the “NEXT BLOG” wherein if it is clicked, it opens a blog from the network in a random.

Disadvantages of Free Webhost:

  1. Free Webhost offers limited features. Most of the webhosts offer limited bandwidth and limited space.
  2. There are Free Webhosts that requires its users to retain the company’s code at the users’ blogs. These codes often times are advertising scripts, or links to the company’s home page.
  3. There are Free Webhosts although they do not require you to do a thing as stated in number 3 however they do not allow you to make money from your blog.
  4. Some Free Webhosts has its own engine that monitors the activity of its users’ blogs. If this engine identifies your blog as spam, the system automatically suspends your blog, and after several days, you’ll find your blog deleted already.

Therefore, free webhost is good only if you want to create a blog but don’t have plans to make huge money from them.

Since our purpose of starting our own blog is to earn huge money from it, so we better get our own webhost. But first, here are the advantages and disadvantages of the paid host.

Advantages of Paid Hosting:

  1. You can freely take off all the restrictions if you want.
    • You can increase the bandwidth
    • You can increase the space
    • You can install features which you think useful to your blog
    • You can customize everything.
  2. You can have your own email using your own domain.
  3. Paid Hosting is not really that expensive.
  4. Paid Hosting has customer or tech support. If you experience problems with your site, you can call for a help from their support services.
  5. And of course, you can make money online from the blog hosted by paid host.
  6. One more thing: You can transfer from one host to other host without losing traffic.

Disadvantage of Paid Hosting:

  1. Actually I found only one problem with Paid Hosting and it is being a paid hosting. All the things you want for should be paid.

Actually, you don’t have to worry if you are spending money for your blog especially in getting a host.

Remember that blogging for money (making money online by blogging) is a kind of investment. The money you spent for your blog can be considered as your investment capital. However, it doesn’t end up with just spending money for your blog. If you do the right thing, then you’ll earn enough money which is enough for your blogging expenses including your own salary as professional blogger of your own blog. And if you continue to work hard for your blog, then time will come that you’ll earn huge money from your blog that is enough to buy your own house, own car, and finance your trip around the world.

So, how to pick the right web host?

Here’s the list of the things that you need to consider in picking a webhost that will host your blog:

  1. Uptime. Uptime is the percentage of time that your website or blog is viewable. So you need to know what the uptime of that webhost is. Best webhost has the lowest uptime of 99.5%.Servers of any webhosts are just made of human. So there is no perfect server. From time to time, the server hosting your website or blog will experience problem which causes your website or blog to be down or not viewable.
  2. Disk Space. Check the disk space that the webhost is offering in every package that it offers.
  3. Bandwidth. Bandwidth is the capacity of data being transferred from the server of your website or blog to computers of your blog’s or website’s visitors.
  4. Support. Good webhost has 24/7 support system. You really need support from your webhost because there will be times that you’ll be experiencing problems with their services.

Can you recommend us few best hosts?

From the review made by other bloggers who happened to transfer from one host to the other in search of better webhosting, I found that the following are better webhosts:

  1. DreamHost Webhosting (http://www.dreamhost.com/)
  2. Host Monster Webhosting (http://www.hostmonster.com/)
  3. BlueHost Web Hosting Provider (http://www.bluehost.com/)
  4. In Motion Hosting (http://www.inmotionhosting.com)

However, these webhosts are all based outside the Philippines, thus you need to pay them using Credit Cards.

Now what if you don’t have credit cards? Actually, there is no problem with it because there are good webhosts that are based in the Philippines. From several webhosts that I tried with, only two of them passed my preferences:

  1. PlogHost. Learn why I decided to remain my blog hosted by PlogHost by reading my article, “What Makes a Webhost Better than the Other?“.
  2. NokiaHost

And if you want to pay for your obligation to these local webhosts, you have to options to pay through bank to bank deposit, smart money or GCash.

  1. I am hosted in Dream Host.. Well Dream host still serves it purpose :)

  2. SELaplana says:

I think there are lots of pinoy bloggers who transferred already from their local webhosts to dream host.

I really wonder how good is dream host compared to the local webhosts….

  3. bendz says:

I have to agree with you on the exceptional support that Yuga’s company provide. It takes a blogger to know what a blogger goes through specially when it comes to blogging downtime caused by heavy spike in traffic. However, it seems that local web hosts are more expensive than international ones.

  4. SELaplana says:

I agree that local webhosts are more expensive than those international webhosts especially with those listed above. But for those who don’t have credit cards and paypal account would have a hardtime getting accounts from those international webhosts.

By the d way Bendz, when I accessed your blog just after posting this comment, I found out that your blog has been suspended again.

  5. bloggista says:

I am on Hostmonster and another one on Bluehost. Although these two are of the same company, BLuehost offers superior reliability in terms of downtime. While most companies boast of 99.9% uptime, I realized later those do not include downtimes due to events that can be blamed by God, fire, etc. Some don’t even include planned maintenance, which sometimes seemed to be more frequent.

Foreign hosting also offers bigger space and bandwidths, something that the local hosting cannot compete with – and this understandable because we don’t really have a truly “de-regulated” telecoms industry. It’s still controlled mostly by PLDT – thus pricing is still way way higher than other countries. Right now I am considering getting a dedicated server, at first I was planning to put up the server myself, but the 10mbps upload requirement is simply too costly.

Thus we don’t have much choices but go somewhere else.

  6. Snow says:

I am currently hosted via site sponsorship at Page PH Philippines. So far so good but I plan to consider a foreign web hosting in my future projects.

I can’t seem to decide right now. But this is a good list. :)

  7. Lhurey says:

I’m on hostingzoom at so far wala akong problema sa kanila.

  8. Roy says:

a friend recommended to mobilehive for a blog host (local)

another one said hostgator is better (non-local)

    any comments on the two?

  9. Vincent says:

I’ve also using hostingzoom for 2 years now. So far so good.

Here in the Philippines I’ve used greymatterunlimited hosting from 2004-2008

  10. Angel Cuala says:

I am using a low-cost hosting service now but of course, I plan to upgrade it if my earnings are sufficient enough.

I used to blog at blogger and I must admit, it was easier to use it. But of course, there is always time to grow up.

    hey!
I made with photoshop anime myspace pictures.
    have a look at them:

Thank you for your site :-) xxoxo

  12. Nerd says:

Great article! Perfect timing as I am planning to purchase a dedicated server from a reliable web hosting company.

Is selaplana.com hosted on a dedicated server?
How much are you paying for the hosting alone?

  13. don_Ser says:

dreamhost gamit kow pero lagi nagdadown. hehe

  14. SELaplana says:

@Don_Ser – :-) totoo? sabi nila 99.99% daw uptime ng dreamhost.

@Nerd – Actually, my account is still an ordinary shared hosting account under my own reseller hosting. Few of my blogs are hosted by my own reseller hosting. The real host is Ploghost.Com.

I am actually planning to have my own dedicated server but I can’t afford yet

  15. Gani says:

    Hi,

Your blog is very informative and helpful. It’s from you that I first heard that we have local webhosting providers in the Philippines. It’s of great interest to me because I intend to put up my own blog. What’s keeping from doing it is because I don’t have a credit card. I intend to register for a paypal account, but I am at a loss as how to go about funding this account for possible expenses related to acquiring domain name and webhosting.

Are you still with Ploghost by the way? Here are some quick questions and concerns about Ploghost:

    1. Do they accept Smartmoney as a mode of payment?
    2. I read somewhere Ploghost is not uptodate with its Wordpress version. Is this true? In your case, what version of Wordpress do you have?
    3. I know you speak highly of Ploghost in your own blog, but between us two (without Sir Yuga overhearing us – hehehe), would you say you’re getting your money’s worth?

I would love to hear from you. Thanks for your time.

    Gani

  16. SELaplana says:

Hello. Thank you for sending me you queries:

Currently, My SELaplana blog and its subdomains are hosted by the Ploghost.com. I have a reseller account with them. So each of the blogs in the selaplana.com’s subdomain has its own hosting account under my reseller.

But just like what I said earlier, I also have websites hosted by Nokiahost.com.

Here’s my answers to your questions:

    1. Ploghost currently do not accept SmartMoney. They only accept bank to bank deposit to Metrobank, BPI and Banco de Oro, and Paypal.
    2. Currently, my wordress has been upgraded to the latest version. The webhost has Fantastico where you can install your wordpress blog for the first time, however updating the wordpress installed already in our blog is our job. We can do it by downloading the latest version of it, unpacked it into our hardisk and uploading the files through the FTP into the place where it should be.
    3. Based on my experience, I can say… Yes I am getting my money’s worth. But of course, I knew few people who are discontented with their service. I just couldn’t tell what’s the percentage of those people who are discontented since there are hundreds, if not thousands, of clients the webhost has.

    thanks…

  17. Beau Rudd says:

    I use this company simplehelix.com

You can host 10 domains for 20 dollars a month!

Been using it for about 2 months and it works great.

  18. lestat says:
