What is SEO?

Some of the regular visitors of this blog, “SELaplana“, are bloggers and are already knowledgeable on SEO and are more knowledgeable than me.

So, this article is not really for them. I wrote this article for the sake of those new to blogging who don’t know yet how to drive traffic into their blogs:

Can you elaborate on SEO’s and how to drive more traffic to one’s blogs? Thanks. (Comment by Ormocanon)

What is SEO?

SEO stands for the “Search Engine Optimization”. It also stands for  “Search Engine Optimizer”.

Search Engine Optimization is a marketing technique used by webmasters and bloggers in driving traffic into their websites or blogs through the SERP.

SERP stands for “Search Engine Result Pages” and is sometimes used to stand for “Search Engine Result Position”.

The Search Engine Optimizer, on the other hand, is the person who practices the Search Engine Optimization. Those who accept  a job in exchange of money are called Professional SEO or Professional Search Engine Optimizer, while those SEO who practice SEO for their own blogs and websites without aiming to gain money from this job are simply the Amateur SEO or Amateur Search Engine Optimizer.

Basically, the goal of optimizing your blog or website for the search engine is to snatch the top position of the search engine result, because it was proven that the top list in the search result pages are those webpages that are most likely visited by the searchers.

But, why is there a need to drive traffic into your blog?

I already mentioned many times in my previous articles that the traffic of your blog is the life of your blog. A blog without traffic is dead and useless. And besides, there will be no advertisers who will rent a space in your blog and you will never earn even a single cent from other PPC advertising if no one is visiting your blog.

Why is there a need to SEO a website or blog?

In my previous article, “How to increase Blog’s Visitors?“, I gave you 10 ways on how to gain visitors for your blog. But among these 10 ways of driving traffic into your blog, optimizing your blog or website for the search engine (SEO) is the only way where you can drive constant, huge, and quality visitors into your blog or website without spending money (except if you’ll hire professional SEO).

Adword advertising and other ways of advertising could drive quality traffic into your blog but you need, of course, to spend money for every clicks on your ad or every 1000 impression of your ad.

The other ways of driving visitors into your blog which I listed on my previous article might drive traffic into your blog but couldn’t drive  constant volume of traffic that are much targeted and relevant.

Just imagine if your blog and its webpages are listed on the top of the SERP when searching for 1000 different keywords or keyphrase. Let’s say that all 1000 keywords have constant number of volume of searches and the number of clicks on your blog’s webpages at the SERP. If every keyword has 100 searches everyday and among the 100 searches your blog’s webpages are clicked 80 times, in other words your blog gains 80 visitors in just 1 particular keyword or key phrase. And it also means that in 1000 keywords, your blog will receive 80,000 unique visitors every day.

However today, there are already billions if not trillions of website that exist in the internet. These websites can be your blog’s direct or indirect competitor in the top position at the SERP. So, since you want to drive constant volume of traffic that are relevant and targeted, then you need to do the SEO into your blog, aiming that your blog’s webpages will be at the higher position of the SERP on every targeted searches.

How to SEO a blog?

Optimizing your blog for the search engine can be tricky. You need to understand how the search engine ranks the webpages in every searches made.

If you’ll ask different SEO how to SEO a blog or website, you’ll receive lots of thoughts in which others are sometimes contradictory to each other. This is because the behavior and the design of the algorithm used by a search engine are not totally revealed. So every SEO has their own understanding on how a search engine behave and how it ranks webpages.

On this series of articles, we’ll be talking about the common thought of SEOing a blog based on the known characteristics of the search engine.

There are actually two types of SEO job:

  1. On-site SEO. An SEO job that focused on the webpages of the blog. Read my article, “What is On-Site SEO?
  2. Off-site SEO. It is the optimization job that focuses on the aspects that are off your blog of which the search engine considers in ranking your webpages at the SERP. “What is Off-Site SEO?

Again, this is a series of articles related to SEO. Let’s continue the discussion on my future articles.
