How to Succeed in Blogging?
Goals and Vision in Blogging
I know that before you started your blog, you already have your own reasons why you want to blog. You also have your goals or targets in blogging. And you are already seeing the picture of what will happen after a year of blogging.
For example:
Year 2003 when I started blogging using the free blogging platform and free blog hosting of blogger.com, with the sole purpose of enhancing my English writing skills. The plan was to write personal journals in English language, and publish them on the blog even if those journals were written awkwardly and grammatically erroneous.
I continued my blogging activities even if visitors of that blog and other Filipino bloggers were calling me idiot, moron, dumb, and told me to stop publishing journals because according to them I was just ruining the image of Filipino (in general). I was hurt on what I learned from their reactions but I didn’t stop blogging, instead I considered their comments as my inspiration in blogging.
Now, here I am. My grammar and the way I write articles are not yet perfect but at least there’s a great improvement in my writing style and skill.
Success in Blogging
Success in blogging can be determined based on the goals of the bloggers in blogging. If you acheived what you aimed for as you blog in your blog, then you succeed, otherwise you failed.
So, for you to know whether you will be successful in blogging or not after a period of time, you should first clearly identify your goals or target in blogging and your vision about your blog, because these will serve as your guide while you blog in your blog.
For example:
Here on this blog, “SELaplana“, few of my targets for the year 2009 are:
- To write at least 15 “how to” articles every month about blogging, SEO, and other related topics.
- To target through SEO at least 1 popular keyword related (or not) to blogging every month.
- To gain at least 10,000 feed subscribers in a year.
If I’ll successfully meet these targets then by the end of the year 2009, this blog will have at least 20,000 feed subscribers, 5,000 daily visitors, and earning for at least $50 every day.
But what should you do to become successful in blogging after identifying the targets or goals in blogging and your vision about your blog?
The Secret to Successful Blogging
Every successful blogger had their own ways on how they successfully meet what they wanted for their blogs. But the very foundation of this are:
1) Knowledge
You can do nothing if you don’t know what to do. You can’t blog if you don’t know what to blog and how to blog. And there will be no visitors who will read your blog if you don’t know how to market your blog.
So, the basic knowledge that you should acquire to become successful in blogging are:
Blog Management
Blog management includes, installation of the blogging platform; customization of the blog’s theme; installation, customization, and updating of plugins; etc.
Quality Article Writing
You should also learn how to write quality articles that can be helpful, useful, and interesting to your blog’s visitors.
Marketing and Search Engine Optimization
Search Engine Optimization is actually part of marketing of your blog. The purpose of marketing your blog is to gain more visitors for your blog.
Monetizing your blog
You also need to know the ways on how to monetize your blog so that your effort will be paid of and you’ll have money to spend for the maintenance of your blog.
2) Passion
Actually, your passion to blogging should be listed first because it’s the one that leads you to study, learn and acquire knowledge that we talked above. Your passion will give you strength for you to work harder in blogging. It’s the one that will give you enough courage to follow what has been planned.
3) Hardwork and Discipline
The things you learned from reading books, articles, from your mistakes, and from your experiences couldn’t help you succeed in blogging if you will not implement them properly.
Remember that lazy blogger will never be successful.

very nicely said! how will we ever attain our goals if we dont what they are? therefore, they must be articulated so that we know whether we are on the right track
yap. so you need to plan what you need to do based on your target or goals. At the end of the target period, you’ll know if you fail or succeed.
I started blogging since late 2007, and had a lot of failures especially in monetizing my other blogs. While I am being impressed with your detailed post, I think the reason why others fail (which includes me before) is the lost of focus.
There a lot of distractions while blogging, and if you cannot help but be carried away with them then it will be your worst nightmare.
About passion, I think there are times that doing what we love most is not the key to success. Blogging for money is business, and you should be willing to learn the different marketing strategies. For example, you may love painting very much and you may gain tons of followers because of your love for the art. However, you will not make money if you don’t know to sell them or don’t have anyone to help you.

The “lost of Focus” that you mentioned is actually under the “Discipline’.
By the way, it’s not at all time that your business will be based on what you love most. But often times you need to love the business you started. So, if you started a blog for money, then put your passion in it… love it… because just like what I said, your passion will lead you to study the things that you need to know, and your passion will give you strength to do the things that you need to do.

I think I miss some points. Is success in blogging defined by the usefulness of your articles and the of readers following your blog, or is it defined according to how well your blog compensate you monetarily?
succeed in blogging depends on your vision and goals. If your goal is to publish useful articles, and then in a certain period of time you successfully got your goal, then you succeed.
And if your goal is to earn certain amount of money in a month, and if you met that goal, then you succeed. Otherwise you fail.
I also set some goals for my blog. I’m happy that even though my blog is quite young (turning 5 months before the month ends), it has been gaining traffic already with few hundred visitors per day. Basically, a blogger should have specific niche in order for him to become successful. And you are very right that writing quality articles and marketing your blog is a way for you to become a successful blogger. As they say, content is KING while marketing is the QUEEN. I hope I could gain more visitors to my blog. I would be very happy if I could reach at least a thousand visitors a day.
your niche is quite good and I think its high CPC in Adsense. I guess you have the better chance to earn huge money than me.
