Lost Thousands of Traffic
I still have many things to share you on how to gain more traffic for your blog. But I decided not to publish them now because this blog has experienced a tremendous drop of traffic from thousands of traffic to a few hundred only. I think, it’s not good tell other bloggers how to gain traffic while my blog lost thousands of it.
For now, I am still examining the blog, the SERP, and the traffic statistics to finally tell what really caused this. Few of the reasons that might cause the drop of traffic are:
- Search Engine Penalty
- Lost the higher rank in the SERP
- People who tend to visit your blog abstain from using the internet because of the “Kwaresma” and the holy week.
Why I Lost Thousands of Traffic and How do I fixed the problem?
Yesterday (March 28, 2009) at 7:00PM, through the traffic report of the Philippine TopBlogs ranking website for this (Make Money Online by Blogging) blog, I noticed that only more or less 10 visitors visited the blog. This is unusual because usually at 7:00PM there are more or less 500 visitors visited the blog already.
I checked the traffic information recorded by the Google Analytics for that day alone and I found out that there are no traffic recorded that are coming from the any search engines.
Knowing that there were no visitors who were coming from the search engine really made me nervous because that would mean that the blog was already penalized by Google.
So, I then tried to google some known keywords that this blog ranked high at the SERP and I found out that this blog was still on its position on the SERP. I immediately concluded that the blog was not penalized by any search engines.
But what made me wonder is that, if the blog was still ranked high on the SERP of any search engines then why is it that the blog got no visitors coming from the search engines?
I even asked my wife for an idea. Then she told me that the internet users who would likely visit this blog were in vacation because Catholics are observing the so called “Kwaresma” and then next week will be their “Holy Week”.
My wife has points. So, I immediately checked the traffic of the blog of Yuga, Macuha, Jehzlau, and Tech at Hand. I compared the trend of the traffic of the said blogs to the trend of the traffic of this blog, and I found out that the traffic of this seems abnormal. There’s really a problem, but I just couldn’t point where the problem is coming from.
The good thing is that, after publishing original content of this article, Yuga posted a comment below:
Do you use multiple analytics tool to check your stats? Did you compare the percentage of traffic sent by Google vs. Yahoo? I noticed that WP-Supercache has cached the WP-Mobile version of your blog and served it to regular web browsers and not just mobile browsers. And since the cached mobile pages don’t have Google Analytics, it may not have registered the traffic. I suggest just empty the WP-SuperCache. This happened to my blog before.
That’s the time when I remember the Wp-Super-Cache plugin. I immediately deleted all the cache generated by the Wp-Super-Cache plugin. Then I googled the “SELaplana” keyword and clicked on the link posted at the SERP. After that, the “Error 500 Forbidden” displayed on my browser. I refreshed the browser by clicking the “Refresh” button but still it reported an “Error 500, Forbidden”. I again refreshed the browser by clicking the Address bar and press “Enter”, then the blog showed.
From that, I realized that the problem is on the blog, if not, it’s the server problem.
I checked the “.htaccess” file. While reading the content of it, an idea popped out of my head telling me to disable the “Hot Linking Protection”. After disabling it, I again tried to open the blog from the SERP. And finally, it’s working again.
With this: I finally concluded that the problem was caused by the conflict between the “WP-Super-Cache” plugin and the “Hot Linking Protection” of which their codes where all written in the “.htaccess” file. Because of this conflict, all the traffic coming from the search engines were issued by the server with the “Error 500, Forbidden Access”.

There are many instance when I visit your blog and error message (something like database or server connection – I forget it) greets me. I keep on coming back because I like the way you blog and the information you shared to us. You may add this to your list. I know that you are aware of this because I read your blog about it.
thanks for the input…
actually the “Database connection Error” was caused by the limitation when a large blog like this blog is hosted in a server of which its resources are shared by other websites hosted by the server.
The only solution to avoid such problem is to transfer this blog to a dedicated server. And the my problem is that, I still can’t afford the fees for a dedicated server.
This happened to my blog before.
thanks po sa comments niyo. It really helped me found and fixed the problem.
mukha sobra yata ang ibinaba ng traffic mo. di kaya google penalty yan?
Yap, sobra talaga ang ibinaba, but it’s not caused by the penalty from search engines because some pages of this blog are still ranked high at the SERP
to many keywords, pictures used from other sites, forwarding a domain to your domain, static IP with your hosting company must and make sure that you don’t have your other sites linked to it if they do link to your site put your other sites on another host, domain over 8 years bought.
IO had the same thing happen to my website and above is what I did to fix it http://www.uniqueinteraction.com I’m show for all the major keywords on all search engines for Philippines call center etc. I’m not getting allot of hits be I’m showing on the front page of google for many keywords.
Hope this help and I like your blog
Beau
All you can do is try need things to see if they work, don’t give up
sorry new things
Hi! thanks for the input….
will take note of this one. so far, my problems are with the hosting. will have my site re-setup.
I am also having problem being hosted in a shared server. I think, I need to get a VPS or Dedicated one.
indeed Sel! with the way your sites are doing, VPS or dedicated server is the way to go.
wow, good thing you got it fixed bro. for sure it has caused you some cold sweat down your spine. and one good thing in blogging is that there are so many bloggers around that are every ready to lend a helping hand, just like yuga.
kudos bro.
yes… I was really nervous thinking that this blog might be penalized by SE.
Currently, I am still having 1 proble… the bandwidth allocated for this blog is about to be consumed…
very informative articles, thanks!
thanks for visiting but your comment is a spam.
I am also having problem with “WP-Super-Cache” that is why I disable it, I don’t know but this plugin seems to have lots of issue with other plugin
for now I disabled the super cache option of this plugin because it failed to work with the Wordpress Mobile plugin. Naka-half mode ang plugin ngayon.
Hi Kuya Sel,
I don’t really have a lot of traffic in my site but do i need to disable hot linking in my site?
When you said, you checked the traffic of other blogs like yuga, macuha, etc. Did you use some kind of software or just on the traffic reports of topblogs?
Hello!
If you have lots of images uploaded to the internet, or even if there are only few of them, you need to disable hotlinking in your site to save bandwidth of your site.
You see, hotlinkers or websites using your images by directly putting the images into their website without uploading the images into their own server are like robbers, and are stealing your bandwidth.
Now… when checking the traffic of other websites, I just look at the traffic reported by the topblogs-rankingwebsites that those blogs participated, or other websites that are tracking their traffic.
For example, if i want to know the traffic of your website, I just visit your status through the TopBlogs.com.ph or by visiting this page.
Thanks for the thought Sir.
As to what you have advised, i’ll enable hotlinking in my site. How will i ever increase my site visitors. Does my site suck?
i’m sorry. but i think, it’s not ENABLE but DISABLE. Enabling hotlinking means allowing other sites to hotlink to your images in your server.
Oh thanks for this information although I never used the WP_Super Cache plugin. I am also hoping to further increase my traffic.
actually you can use that plugin even if the traffic is not yet huge especially if your blog is hosted by a shared sever,.
Were you using a plugin for hotlink protection or was it mod/rewrite rules for hotlink protection added to your .htaccess file?
I just recently installed WP Super Cache on my blog and before that I already have hotlink protection mod/rewrite rules on my .htaccess file. I’m afraid that it can cause problems or conflict like what happened to your blog.
Anyways, I’ll be keeping track and see if I start losing some traffic then I’ll remove the hotlink protection rules. Thanks for sharing about this!
