What Webhost’s Server is Best For a Busy Blog?
I already wrote articles before about webhosts. Few of those articles are:
But I think those articles are already obsolete. I wanted to edit them but I think, it would be better if I will write a new one.
And few days ago, I also published an article related to webhost or webhosting. The article has a title, “Avoiding Blog Downtimes“.
On that article, I mentioned that “a shared server is not the best server for a blog that caters thousands of visitors a day“.
Why shared server is not best for your busy blog?
The shared server is a server that hosts hundreds or thousands of webhosting accounts in which the total server’s resources are being shared by websites of every account hosted by that server.
The number 1 disadvantage of a shared server is that when a website caused trouble to the server by simply eating up the resources, all websites hosted by that server will be affected.
That’s what this blog (SELaplana) had actually experienced since its early existing up to the time when I decided to transfer it to a VPS server.
Before, you’d always noticed that when accessing this blog, your browser would tell you an error had been encountered by this blog. Most of the time, this blog had the error in connecting to the database. But there were also times that the server of this blog was simply inaccessible due to its firewall problem or was simply dead.
So, what kind of webhost’s server that is best for a busy blog?
You have actually two options to choose:
- VPS (Virtual Private Server)
- Dedicated Server
VPS or Virtual Private Server
Virtual Private Server or sometimes called as Virtual Dedicated Server acts like a dedicated server even if it is part a server shared by other webhosting accounts. It can be best compared to an apartment building which is divided into the apartment units and each apartment unit has its own and independent power and water supply.
In other words, a VPS is a server divided into partitions of servers of which each partition acts like a dedicated server. Each of the partitions has its own operating system, disk space, memory allocation and can be rebooted without affecting other partitions.
VPS is more expensive that a shared server but is cheaper than the real or physical dedicated server.
Here’s few of the VPS offered by popular webhosting companies. It includes info about them. Some bloggers that I knew got hosting solution from them.
- InMotionHosting
- Plan 256M – $49.95/mo (if monthly billing)
- Memory: 256MB – 1GB
- Disk Space: 40GB
- Bandwidth: 500GB
- Websites to host: Unlimited
- Park Domains to use: Unlimited
- IP : 2 - Media Temple DV
- $50/mo (if monthly payment)
- Memory: 256MB
- Disk Space: 20 GB
- Bandwidth: 1,000GB
- Websites to host: unlimited (can be used as reseller) - DreamHost PS + PS – MySQL
- 256MB DreamHost PS: $25.6/mo + 150MB PS-MySQL: $15/mo = $32.48/mo with 20% discount. (DreamHost PS and PS-MySQL are adjustable from 150MB up)
- Plus $119.4/1-year hosting
- Other features: unlimited
Dedicated Server
A dedicated server is a single unit of server which is offered to a single client. In other words, if you’ll get a dedicated server, there’s no other client who can share that server from you. Except of course if you’ll share it with your friends.
So, a dedicated server is more expensive than the VPS, considering that the whole server is being rented by you.
Few of my friends recommended to me the Host Gator’s Dedicated server. The price of the Linux server at the HostGator ranges from $174/mo to $374/mo depending on the processor used by the server.

I know that some of you got your own VPS or Dedicated Server for your websites of blogs. Please share something to us about your servers, for to learn something that would help us decide what webhost is best for us.

Hello Sel, I will not share to you about MY own VPS or dedicated server because I don’t have one. I want to share some points before you go with VPS or Dedicated server.
Do not be blinded with the price, consider your resources and technical expertise in managing your own server. Doing backups, upgrades, security patches, etc. Most of the host however includes all of these in the package.
Customer service, costumer service, customer service. I need to repeat it, put it at the top of the list. The best way to know it is to contact them.
Consider also the location of your server in connection to the source of your traffic, if most of your traffic came from the Philippines, it is wise to have a server located in the Philippines and you can contact Sir Abe Olandres for that. If most of your traffic came from US, go with the US server.
I have no firsthand experience with VPS or dedicated server, please do not consider this comment as an advice. I share this because I believe I share some important points.
Good luck and I wish for your success.
Thanks Mel for the input.
And just like what you said, customer support is the number 1 thing to consider. But I noticed that only few webhost do have better customer support. Some webmasters said Media Temple has the best customer support but the price of their products are too high too.
And currently, my VPS is in the US. I guess there’s no problem for now.
Bluehost bad service yan. maganda pa yung marvinsweb diyan
So, ibig sabihin mas worst pa ang bluehost?
I will have to agree about the customer service, I myself am not that techy and just got my own web host. But because my provider has good customer service It wasn’t a hassle for me.
Anyway, you have great points here and also because this is for the “busy” blogs na super more than 1G ang traffic
.
Oh thanks for visiting my blog and leaving your comment.
I guess I will have to worry about getting those thousands of visitors first. hehehe. But thanks for this great inputs.
Welcome!
Yeah… getting thousands of visitors first before dealing with VPS…
oversold and hardware ng bluehost. kapag sinabi nilang 1 TB ang traffic na dedicated sa iyo eh hindi pa nga nangalahit ang consumption mo ay mag-eemail na agad ang admin na yung sie mo raw ay consuming too much resources kaya you have to upgrade.
Actually, all webhosts have policies limiting all the websites hosted by them to consume up to a certain percent of resources. Once your website exceed that limit, you will be advised to transfer your blog to other host or simply upgrade your account to VPS or dedicated.
So, I understand that when Bluehost offered 1 TB bandwidth it doesn’t mean that your website is allowed to consume too much resources (CPU and Memory). You need to lower your sites consumption of server’s resources.
Dreamhost ftw! eversince I switched to VPS, i’ve never contacted their tech support. i can adjust my memory allocation, restart the server on my own. chicken ang pacquiao visitors
That’s what I realized. Dreamhost PS with PS-MySQL is much better than having a VPS that only the tech supports have the access on memory allocation adjustment and rebooting switch.
When you choose a dedicated web server to host your sites you have to pay attention to a lot of things indeed. But the main concern in my point of view is the up time which should be over 99.9% especially if u are running a bussy blog! Things like disk space and bandwidth should be taken in consideration last. There should also be a good raport between the price you pay and the services you receive in exchange!
The rule “u get what u pay for” is applied only in a small number of companies that provide web hosting and this is very sad. So be carefull when you choose a web hosting service!
Hello!
Thanks a lot of your input.
I was struck by your point, “The rule “u get what u pay for” is applied only in a small number of companies that provide web hosting and this is very sad. So be carefull when you choose a web hosting service!“. Just recently, I lost almost $700 to a webhost. I canceled my account from my former host, but i think I will not be refunded.
Nice tips Sel! I am a noob in servers. May I ask, how many page views or probably unique visits per day should a blog use a VPN or Dedicated Server?
So you’re paying at least $50 per month for your server? That’s kinda expensive. I do think this blog is really earning a lot!
If you’re self-hosted wordpress blog caters 4,000 unique visitors every day but then your shared server doesn’t experience downtime… maybe it’s still better to stay there to save money.
However, if you wordpress blog has 2,000 unique visitors every day but it always experiences downtimes…. so you have the option to transfer to other shared server that can handle your blog but it’s hard to find one. The best thing to do is to upgrade your hosting account to VPS.
with regards to the income….
secret :O
That
Sa akin VPS gamit ko. I would want kasi a root access so I can install wordpress blogs via tar.gz mas mabilis.
Plus I can tinker around the linux hosting server faster. Costs about $49 a month so may kamahalan din.
But the good part is it is way better than shared hosting.
