How I Lost $642 to a Webhost?
After I moved this blog and my other blogs under my reseller account that are previously hosted by a local webhost , I immediately asked the customer support whether I will be refunded since I already paid them a 1 year webhosting subscription which officially started on March 6, 2009.
On the support ticket that I posted, I wrote this message:
Hello po,
For example, I will cancel my account on June 6, 2009, is there a refund na matatanggap ako from my 1 year payment for this year?
Thanks po,
The customer support did not answer me. So, on the next day, I wrote another message:
Hi!
I am planning po kasi to merge my blogs under my ****host Reseller Account to my other account in other webhost. Medyo mas malaki po kasi expenses ko don kaya napag-isipisip ko na tipunin na don ang mga blogs ko to cut few expenses, and to help your server as well.
My Reseller Account has been renewed last March 6, 2009 and I already paid 40,255PhP (35,940 + VAT).
If I will cancel my Reseller Account effective June 6, 2009 (3 months), may matatanggap po ba akong refund?
Regards,
SELBOY
The customer support replied but it’s not the direct answer to my query. So I again posted a message:
Hello po,
just want to inform you na nag-abandon na po ako sa aking reseller acount “SELAPLANA.NET”.
I will be thankful po kung meron akong matatanggap na refund kahit ibabawas na ang March 6, 2009 to June 6, 2009 na subscription.
Pero kung sakali wala pong refund, just inform me po.
SELBOY
But after two days, there was no reply on that message, so I posted new message again:
Hello po,
Actually, gusto ko lang po malaman kung meron po bang matatanggap akong refund o wala. Hindi naman po ako magpupumilit kung wala e. Pero mas mabuti po sana kung masagot po ang aking katanungan.
Thanks po.
SELBOY
I again waited. And finally, after two days, the customer support replied:
Yes, you will get a refund for the months that was not used.
It took 11 days for the customer support of my previous webhost to directly answer my query. It seems that they’re not interested to answer a query like this. That’s the reason why I am still doubting if I will receive the refund. And that doubt has made me decide to give this article the title, “How I Lost $642 to a Webhost?”
Why $642?
I have several accounts created with that particular local webhost: A Reseller Account and a couple of single-shared Accounts.
It’s the reseller account that I was paying for more or less $856.49 a year (if at PhP47.00/$1 exchange rate) or PhP40,255 (to be exact). And there were several websites or blogs that were hosted under that reseller account.
And just like what I already mentioned above, this reseller account was renewed last March 6, 2009 and I already paid the whole year subscription.
However, the downtimes that experienced by that account since November 2008 up to December 2008 made me decide to upgrade that reseller account into a VPS.
I tried to contact them, asking them the price of their VPS. I also decided to stay with them as long as they can offer me services that I need whatever the price because I considered them as my beloved “SUKI”. But they did not respond immediately to my message. So, I was thinking that maybe they didn’t have any available VPS.
On the late March 2009, I noticed that the server hosting that reseller account experienced again downtimes almost every day. While waiting for their respond regarding my query about their VPS, I was already considering an option to transfer to other webhost. And that was the time that I remember my shared webhosting account in a US-based webhost which is hosting few of my other blogs.
That said foreign webhost offers a VPS which is just an addon of a shared hosting account.
While researching information about the VPS of that foreign webhost, the local webhost contacted me and offered me a semi-dedicated server for my reseller account. They transferred all my blogs under my reseller into that semi-dedicated server but it ended up to a mess and my blogs experienced longer downtimes.
That experience has made me decide to upgrade my shared account in a foreign webhost into a VPS. After that, I transferred my blogs from my reseller account of that local webhost to the newly set-up VPS of the foreign webhost. And by the midst of April 2009, I successfully abandoned my reseller account.
In other words, I only consumed at least two months of my 1 year subscription. However, if they will really give me the refund, they can simply deduct the charges from March 6, 2009 to June 6, 2009. So, I will be expecting PhP30,191.25 ($642.37 at PhP47/$1 exchage rate).
But I am not yet sure of it.
I will be very much thankful if they will really refund me. But if not, I will just consider it a lesson to learn.

Hi Sel,
Didn’t get any email from you in the last week or so. Actually, the last email I sent you hasn’t be replied yet. Can you email me again to this address? We’d be more than willing to give back the refunds.
Hello,
Sorry po but I think I haven’t received email last week or maybe I missed it. Thank’s a lot po.
Btw, give me your Paypal address I can transfer the money now.
i will send you now po…
Oh, so you’ve already moved and finally left Ploghost? That’s quite sad coz I think our websites shared a server and understand the downtimes you have mentioned. I’ve considered the same move in the past but right now, since my site is just a small blog and I’m just starting, I prefer to stay. Hopefully, no more long downtimes in the future and real support from their Support Team. Anyway, you’re out of it now and I really wish you goodluck in your new webhosting provider and I hope your business prosper as ever.
Actually, I did not totally left Ploghost. I still have blogs hosted by them. I only moved my “Reseller Account” to a VPS.
And yes, my “Reseller Account” SELAPLANA.NET is hosted by the server hosting your website, but my other blogs are currently hosted by a different server of ploghost. And I’m sorry to tell you that there were times that this blog “SELAPLANA.COM” sometimes caused the downtimes of the gravatar server hosting your blog, especially when there were surge of traffic coming into this blog before.
good thing they’re kind enough to promise you a refund. $642 is not a small amount. if ever marefund ka talaga, which i think you already considered it lost, pwede mo yan ipamigay to your blog readers in a contest
Hala! I love this. Err.. mini-seo contest? haha. Nag buot buot na mi Sir Sel noh? hehe. Suggestions lang naman, hehe. Pag nagkataon, muapil gud ko, haha.. Try lang naman.
Actually, wala po akong masabi kay Abs, he’s good. He actually helped me fixed problems before.
I am just really after of the VPS to minimize downtimes and it happens na wala agad silang naibigay na working VPS para sa akin. I immediately decided to move the websites under that account to the VPS of the foreign webhost.
Actually, I am still thinking kung anong magagawa ko dyan sa pera if marefund na ako.
Wow grabeh.
I can only imagine how big your paycheck from Google is.
Anyways, I’ve been told by a blogging friend that local hosts s*cks daw, kaya nga he prefers foreign webhosts. But I think you should really transfer to a new host Sir Sel kasi when I went back to this blog, nag down na naman. Sayang din ang stats nun, hehe.
Good luck sa refund! Sayang din ang 30,00+! Hirap ng buhay, hek3
Actually, my income from adsense is not that big. It only happens that I have sources of income other than the adsense.
Actually, if you’ll compare local host vs foreign host, medyo affordable ang foreign host. But in terms sa ease in paying the fees, I prefer the local host lalo na for the clients who don’t have paypal and credit card.
Thanks for dropping by.
P40,000+ for a reseller account. So VPS is priced much higher. Well, that’s scary figure for a new blogger just out from the starting block. The good news is that you’re blogging full time. And I’m sure there’s much left pa rin even if you deduct these expenses.
Pero from where I sit nakakalula pala binabayaran mo. “,)
Opo. I consider blogging as business. At kahit papano, my net income is fine…. kayang buhayin ang pamilya ko kahit wala akong trabaho.
Yuga has already contacted you so I presume narefund na ung pera mo? Hay, another lost customer for them.
But I’m still giving them a chance.
No, actually I am still their customer. I still have single-account left in the company. Yung reseller account lang ang na-wala from them.
Actually there is an advantage in favor to the other clients in the server sa pagmove-out ko because there were times na ang blog na ito ang siyang dahilan ng server downtimes.
what webhosting service you previously used? and where did you moved?
hmmmm…. if you’ll follow my future articles, you’ll know about them…
Malaki kasi ang traffic mo eh. Marahil eh di kaya ng server nila. They should be able to anticipate this and upgrade their system.
opo… my action has an advantage for the other smaller websites hosted on the server but of course medyo nawalan ng kunti ang webhost ng kita because I pay a lot for just 1 account.
Very minimal ang downtime.
natanggap ko na po yung refund. but I already used the money sa delivery ng asawa ko of my son.
Regarding sa servers or webhost, well, marami ang webhosts sa labas ng bansa na magagaling, but there are also lots of webhost doon that are worst na mas mabuti pa dito ka na lang magpahost sa Pinas.
Gah, I don’t want to be biased to the local hosts, but that’s one of the reasons why I don’t go with them. If “many” Pinoy’s in real life are quiet dirty with their business, how much more the ones in the online world?
But again, just my two cents. I so love my not-so-popular web host
being hosted by a not popular webhost is your advantage. It doesn’t mean that you don’t have much competitors in using the resources of the server hosting your blog. In other words, solo mo yung server.
i think sel we have the same problem and unfortunately same webhost…i also have the same problem that the support could not answer why…my blogs are always down 15hrs in a day…yes, ive been monitoring it…
if your blog has huge traffic, it would be better if you’ll get a VPS na or Dedicated.
I have no doubt of Yuga kahit na di ako nakahost sa kanya and glad to hear na narefund ka na, busy lang cguro kaya di agad nakareply.
I was wondering, sa lakas ng traffic ng blog mo, buti kaya ka ng maliliit lang na hosting? Dapat to naka-vps or dedicated na
“It’s the reseller account that I was paying for more or less $856.49 a year (if at PhP47.00/$1 exchange rate) or PhP40,255 (to be exact). And there were several websites or blogs that were hosted under that reseller account.” – Selboy
I paid only $299 a year for my website. I got it up and running only last February.
I first conducted some due diligence before I decided to push through and register my domain name with this company.
So far, I’m getting my money’s worth in terms of after sales support. I don’t have any previous knowledge about putting up a website and yet I was able to do it because they provide me a step-by-step instruction on how to do it properly.
In other words, they took care of the technical aspects. All I provided was brains and motivation.
