Why Does Google Deindexed Some Webpages of my Blog?

Checking the number of webpages of this blog that are indexed by Google is one of my daily activities. It’s like I’m already addicted on seeing the result when “site:”- searching Google. And I am really happy upon learning that there are more or less 11,000 webpages of this blog, “I Make Money by Blogging” that are already indexed by Google.

You know, I am always working hard so that Google will index every webpage of this blog. And having more than a ten thousand of webpages that are already indexed by Google is quite a success.

But why am I doing this? Why am I trying to let Google index every webpage of this blog?

I’ve been thinking these past days and I realized that the more webpages of this blog are indexed by Google, the more chances that my blog has to top the SERP of Google.

Just imagine if your blog has 100 posts but only 10 of them are indexed by Google. This only means that only 10 posts of your blog have the capability to bring traffic into your blog from the Google SERPs and the other 90 posts are useless.

Now, what if all the 100 posts of your blog are indexed? If your blog’s 10 posts bring 1000 visitors into your blog from the Google SERP, then how much more if all the 100 posts are indexed by Google?

Getting high ranking in SERP of Google is really a competition between webpages of the indexed blogs and websites. And I understand that those webpages that are better SEOed are the ones that will be ranked at top position of the SERP.

To let you know, I targeted a lot of keywords that have large volume of searches. At first I successfully got the top position of the SERP of Google, but as time goes by the competition in getting the top SERP is also getting higher and my blogposts failed to stay on the top position of the SERP.

I haven’t lost hope. I continue SEOing those important posts hoping that one day, they will be ranked high up of the SERP again.

Webpages are deindexed by Google

But the problem is, as I am doing the SEO, other webpages of the blog are being dropped by Google from its index.

There were times that Google revealed that there were 12,000 webpages of the blog that are already in the index. However, this June 2009 I noticed that there were only more or less 8,000 pages of this blog that remained in the Google index.

SEO experts suggested that the possible causes why Google deindex webpages are:

  1. Duplicate content within the blog. Google found several pages and indexed them even if in reality those pages were just duplicate contents. That’s the reason why the number of webpages in the index was high. But after Google realized that those are duplicate content, Google immediately dropped those pages from the index.
  2. Google Penalty. SEOing a certain webpage should be done in moderation because over-SEOing them will only lead to deindexing of the affected webpages, or the entire website or blog.
  3. Google consider those pages untrusted. There are lots of websites and blogs out there that contains malicious codes in which everytime you visit one of them, the code is automatically downloaded and installed into your computer. There are other websites and blogs that are used by blackhat SEOptimizer in linkfarming for their websites being optimized.
Now, if one of the webpages of your blog looks similar to the mentioned websites, then there is a possibility that Google will deindex the webpages of your blog, or the entire website or blog.
  4. Server problem. Some experts said that when Google tried to access a certain webpages of your blog but then failed to access them because of server problem, those webpages will be dropped from the index and consider them “unreachable”.
This is what I actually noticed too.
In the Google Webmasters tools, webpages of my blog that are included on the “Unreachable” section are not also included on the index.

Now, our problem is how could we avoided the deindexing process of Google? And how could we made Google index all the the webpages of our blog or website?

Here’s what we need to do:

  1. Install a sitemap into your site and make use of the Google Webmaster’s tools. Errors in indexing webpages of your blog are reported once Google finds them, so it can help you a lot in fixing the problems.
  2. Make your content unique even if the topic you’re talking in every webpages of your blog is common. The title and meta tags of every webpage should be unique too. This is to avoid being considered by Google as duplicate contents.
  3. Avoid being penalized by Google. Make your own linking strategy natural and don’t over SEO your blog. You’ll never succeed in blogging and making money online once your blog is penalized already by a search engine, except of course if you can duplicate the ability of John Chow.
  4. Get more quality backlinks and avoid getting links from a linkfarm. Getting backlinks from a relevant webpage and from a high PR domain is considered the best thing for a blog. But links from a link -farm will only harm your blog.
  5. Find a better webhost which will host your blog. This is to make sure that every time Google visits your blog and every webpage of your blog, Google can access them, and avoiding the possibility that any webpages of your blog will be included on the “Unreachable” pages.

I think, these five steps can help us a lot so that Google will index 1,000% of the total webpages of our blog. If that happens, then I’m pretty sure that our blog’s webpages will have a better chance in ranking well at the Google SERP in various searches.

And just like what I am always saying… the more webpages of your blog that are ranked well on Google SERP, the more visitors your blog will get…. the more income you’ll gain from your blog.

What do you mean by “Make your own linking strategy natural”
Can you please provide a detailed explanation for this.
Sorry, I’m still a newbie when it comes to SEO. Good post though!

This is so wrong. I have a blog with 20 posts (I have not made a new post for 1.5 months) and I’m at the top of my niche earning me about $500 a month so this “more-post-means-more-traffic” principle can easily debunked. I can cite more blogs out there with way less than 11,000 pages dominating the SERPs even in highly competitive niches such as yours.

But in your case I suspect that you may just be experiencing a case where some of your redundant content pages are “demoted” into Google’s supplemental index. They are not de-indexed outright so relax. They are just put in with the useless pile of rubbish to try and keep the search results free from redundant results. I wouldn’t worry too much about it and wouldn’t spend any time at all checking this like you do. But if you really like to do this, you may be interested in this tool:

Having 20 posts in a blog leads you to earn $500 a month. But is it bad to have 100 posts in a blog, all indexed by Google and will leads you to earn $3,000 a month?

If your answer is NO, then why is it wrong to have lots of articles published in your blog, then all are indexed by Google and will lead you to earn huge money?

Well, if all the webpages that are considered redundant are placed in Google’s supplemental index, then it’s just equivalent to being deindexed because they’re now useless. So, should you just be relaxed with this situation? If YES, then you’re just wasting your time that you spent writing those webpages. Why not edit those webpages and made them unique so that Google will include them again into the SERP?… then with that, they’ll be again useful for you.

anyway, thanks for the comment and for recommending a tool.

I just don’t agree with your assertion that you need a ton of posts and a ton of traffic to make more money. More traffic and more posts does not necessarily mean more money. Please don’t make everyone believe that you need 100 posts to make $3000 a month. The blog I mentioned only gets 80 unique visitors a day, is hosted on free blogger blog and yes, earns a measly $500 per month. But I’ve managed to replicate its success a number of times that many people will be surprised to learn.

Those that are place in the supplemental index are not deindexed. Have you tried getting deindexed, btw? :) It’s a totally different thing, I tell you…

Pages that are moved to the supplemental index are redundant pages like the content of the archives which basically have same things as the post pages. Why on earth would you want that redundant content in the SERPs? If searchers end up getting redundant results, they will stop using search engines. That is why the search engines don’t like them and stash them somewhere where they won’t be able to pollute the SERPs with redundant results…

well, your way of making money by blogging is by creating several blogs that earns money, while my way is launching one blog, writing and publishing articles into it, and earn money from these articles. I don’t blog mainly for money but for my passion but I want to earn money from every articles published into my blog.

And learning that some of my articles were not included on the SERP of which I considered as deindexed (and SEO people considered it as just being placed on the supplemental) really made me sad because in the first place, I spent my time and effort in writing them.

Although I agree that you can earn huge money from a small blog and few traffic but that couldn’t be applied into my blog for reasons that you knew already by simply looking at this blog. For this blog to earn huge money, I need Google to index all the articles published in it, got traffic from the SE, and earn money through the visitors.

In my article above, I wrote this:

And just like what I am always saying… the more webpages of your blog that are ranked well on Google SERP, the more visitors your blog will get…. the more income you’ll gain from your blog.

Actually, there’s nothing wrong with that statement. The gist of it is true for this bog, and is more true for your blogs. And just like what I said already, if you successfully earned $500 from a 20 posts, then by increasing the number of articles, you can also increase the amount of money you’ll earn. but of course it will only happened if those added articles are indexed and included on the SERP because if not, then there’s no reason your income will increase.

Regarding to the reasons why SE placed those redundant pages to the supplemental index… well, I don’t disagree with it because I understand that SE really want to display into the SERP a clean result.

However, I couldn’t just stay relax if I learn that my articles which I spent my time and effort in writing them will just be placed to the supplemental if that happens, just like what I already said, they just became useless. So, I need to do something to make them unique, to be out from the supplemental and be included on the top of the SERP because with that, I can earn money from them.

  6. @ Sel,
I had other blog(a PR2 and 1 page is ranked 7), which is indexed in 1st page and #2 by Google in SERP’s (12m+) and next only to Wiki.
Last week while doing some search, I’m shocked and upset co’z my site is nowhere to be found, not even in the top 50, nor #1 in SERPs using the “quote ” thingy. Though the contents are not that long, but it’s also not a cut and paste site… and more importantly, I’ve not done any SEO stuff either.
However, I’m still thankful that the site’s pagerank is not lost at all, but the page that ranked(7) is completely gone. =(
My question is, why my site is penalized by big G and for what reason?

    btw, great info, thanks!

    • SELaplana says:

Actually, it was not clear for me whether what you said “ranked 7″ means got a PR of 7 or is ranked number 7 on certain SER.

Now if one of the pages of that PR2 blog got a PR of 7 then, that really made me wonder how it happens especially that according to you, you did not bother SEOing it. Based on my knowledge, to PR rating is based on the PR points you get from the backlinks your blog got from other blogs and websites.

On the other hand, if what you really mean is that a certain page is ranked 7 in a certain SER then Google consider that page a more authority in relation to certain search.

You said that that page that is ranked 7 has gone from the SERP. But is it really gone from the SERP? You can verify it by doing the “site” search. For example if the title of the page is “Gwapings sa Maasin” and the URL of the blog is “www.selaplana.com” then do the “site” search by typing this into the Google search box:

      site:www.selaplana.com gwapings sa maasin

If that page is not found on the result of this kind of search, then you’re sure that the page was really gone from the SERP.

But being gone from the SERP is not always the result of the penalty. I already mentioned some reasons in the article above regarding this issue.

Now to verify if your entire blog has been deindexed, type this on the Google search box:

      site:www.selaplana.com

And if the result is zero, then your blog is really deindexed by Google.

But for what reason? You said you haven’t applied the SEO yet. And that’s I think is the problem.

What you need to do is get some backlinks from other blog, so that Google can follow the links back to your blog and index it again.

Regarding the rank of the blog in the SERP, it is normal that a new blog or new posted blogposts sometimes are ranked at the top position in the SERP in particular search but after some times the ranking of it will drop down to the real rank of the blog or blogpost.

  7. @ Sel,
    Thanks for the heads-up!
My site is not totally deindexed but on end of the sh*th*le… And about the page, yeah! it is PR7 for some weeks(that’s what I saw in my toolbar), or maybe either my toolbar nor big G had a mistake and giving my single page a PR7 rank, and when he knows that it’s a mistake then he removed it… :)

    again, thanks!

    ariston

  8. it should be read “they” not he (I assumed that some humans from big G made a mistake)… :) btw, I think I have to do the “what we need to do” stuff… thanks!

Another great post. A quick question though, I have read that meta tags are not anymore read by the big G, how true? Y! on the other hand may look at the tags though.

    • SELaplana says:

Meta tag is still scanned by the Google. In fact the Description (meta) is still used by Google in the SERP.

However, Matt Cutts of Google revealed that the “Keywords” (meta) is not already used by google.

  11. Silent Hill says:

I would not be suprised if Google does use keywords in some way, though. Just my gut feeling on the issue.
