Why Don’t Muslim Celebrate Christmas?
Question:
I’m a Christian. I believe and accepted Christ as my personal savior. I celebrate Christmas not only to commemorate Christ’s birthday but also to remember that God send his only begotten son to save the world.
Here in our place there are many Muslims who have business establishments. And during Christmas season, they’re the largest group that sell Christmas decorations, devices and even pyrotechnic materials like firecrackers, etc.
Do Muslims really celebrate Christmas?
Answer:
Note: Below is my personal answer
best on my knowledge about Islam and
not the official answer of Muslims.
If you want the official answer from the Muslims,
try visiting the nearest authorities of Islam.
Muslims, like the Iglesia ni Cristo and the Jehovah’s Witnesses, do not celebrate Christmas as part of their religion. Although there are Muslims who participate in the Christmas celebration but it’s not because they’re trying to celebrate the birthday of Christ but only because they want to be part of the Christmas as a cultural celebration.
But if we will talk about the Islam and its doctrine, Muslims are prohibited to celebrate Christmas because of the following reasons:
- Christmas is in nature a pagan celebration which originated in Rome. Exchanging of gifts, Christmas tree, Santa Clause, Caroling, and other activities associated with Christmas are all pagan in origin and pagan in nature. Muslims are prohibited to take part of any pagan festivities.
- December 25 is not the real birthday of Christ. Celebrating the birthday of Christ on December 25 as if it is the real date of the birthday is like upholding lies.
- Muslim believe in Jesus but not as the Son of God but only as Prophet like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Ismael, and other prophets including Muhammad. And among the prophets that Muslims believed with, it’s Muhammad that they consider as the most important prophet because Muhammad brought in the religion of Islam.
- Muslims do not celebrate the birthday of Muhammad who was the most important prophet. Then why should they celebrate the birthday of Jesus who is not as important prophet of Islam as the Prophet Muhammad?
- Muslims are not Christians so why should they? If there are Christian religions that do not upheld the teaching in the celebration of Christmas then there’s no reason for a not Christian religion to celebrate it.
