Everybody knew that Calcium is needed by our body especially for our bone structure. That’s the reason why we tried to drink milk everybody and the others took Calcium supplement to avoid the risks on the bones.

But, in recent studies shown that taking Calcium pills (supplement) provide less or no benefit at all especially to those who took Calcium supplement without the aid of Vitamin D.

Taking Calcium supplement might have positive effect to our bone but it never reduced bone fracture and mortality. And the worst thing is that, it increases the risks of heart failure.

Here’s the conclusion of the studies made by a team of researchers as published at the BMJ:

Calcium supplements (without coadministered vitamin D) are associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction. As calcium supplements are widely used these modest increases in risk of cardiovascular disease might translate into a large burden of disease in the population. A reassessment of the role of calcium supplements in the management of osteoporosis is warranted.

Kidney Stone

There was also a time that a guest medical doctor of the ABS-CBN program “Salamat Dok” said that the side effect of taking Calcium supplement is the kidney stones. According to him, only few percent of the Calcium tablet was absorbed by the body and the other part of the Calcium would just be absorbed by the Kidney that would later be thrown away as part of the urine. However, not all Calcium in the kidney would be washed away when the patient urinate because some part of it became kidney stone.

Vitamin D

Some of you might wonder why those patient who took Calcium supplement without taking Vitamin D too were the ones with high risk… Well, Vitamin D helps our body absorb the Calcium we took for the development of our bones. So, without this fat-soluble vitamin, Calcium we took will not be utilized by our body for our bone but will just be absorbed by our kidney and become part of the urine, or worst, it will just just become hardened in the blood arteries and veins that will result to heart failure.
