Below is the x-ray image of the lungs of Massachusetts man, Ron Sveden, with the sprouting pea (about half an inch in size) in one of the lungs.

The doctors told him that he must have eaten a pea that accidentally went into his lung instead of going into his stomach.

About Mr. Ron Sveden

Ron Sveden, 75-year old and a retired teacher in Massachusetts, was suffering from emphysema for several months already. His illness became worse in May. He was coughing a lot, so his wife called the 911 and he was brought to the hospital. Through the x-ray, the doctors found a dark spot in one of his lung. At first he thought that he had tumor in his lung but the doctors found that he was negative with cancer. With further tests, the doctors finally found out that the dark spot in his lung as shown on the x-ray image was a sprouting pea of about half of an inch in length.

Mr. Sveden is currently recovering from a surgery made.

Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lung that primarily causes shortness of breath. In people with emphysema, the tissues necessary to support the physical shape and function of the lungs are destroyed. It is included in a group of diseases called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD (pulmonary refers to the lungs). Emphysema is called an obstructive lung disease because the destruction of lung tissue around smaller airways, called alveoli, makes these airways unable to hold their functional shape upon exhalation.
