St. Pedro Calungsod


On October 21, 2012, Pedro Calungsod will be canonized by the Catholic Church making him another Filipino Saint next to St. Lorenzo Ruiz.

Who is Pedro Calungsod

Pedro Calungsod is from Cebu. He was born in 1655 in the Diocese of Cebu.

Diocese of Cebu in that time covers Cebu, Panay Island, Mindanao Island and Guam. He was in Guam along with a Jesuit Priest who is now the Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores, for a Catholic Mission of converting the natives into the Catholic faith. He was a lay-Catechist.

The two missionaries were persecuted by the people in Guam, after a certain Chinese accused them of spreading poison during the baptismal ritual.

So on April 2, 1672, the day before the Palm Sunday, the Jesuit Priest was attacked by the natives of Guam. Pedro Calungsod who was 17-year old at that time defended the priest and he was struck by a spear and then his head was hit by a machete which resulted to the splitting of his skull.

Their bodies where said being tied together by the natives and were thrown into the sea.

Beatification of Pedro Calungsod

On March 5, 2000, Pope John Paul II beatified Pedro Calungsod in ceremonies held at St. Peter Square where other martyrs of the Catholic Church were also beatified. April 2 was the official date of the feast of Pedro Calungsod.

Canonization of the Sainthood of Pedro Calungsod

Last October 2011, the Vatican verified the second (2nd) miracle through his intercession. This miracle is the healing of a Cebuana business woman who was in coma in 2003.
