China’s New Aircraft Carrier To Safeguard Claimed Islands

Peoples Republic of China handed over its first aircraft carrier to the People’s Liberation Army, Sunday September 23, 2012. The 300 meters long carrier is formerly Soviet’s Varyag carrier. It was not however used because before the construction of it finished, the Soviet fell.

According to reports, China bought carrier’s armoured hull from Ukraine in 1998 but it has no engine, electrics or propeller. In 2002, China started building the carrier.

The Chinese authorities revealed that the aircraft carrier will not be used in war but in research. But many people think that this will be used to gain more control over the disputed islands in the South China Sea (West Philippine Sea).
