My answer to the question sent to me by a subscriber of this blog regarding hormonal imbalance and it's relation to facial hair.

Subscriber’s question:

Hello Sel,

I read your article about hormonal imbalance. I learned a lot from it especially that my friends told me that I might suffering from hormonal imbalance since I have lots of facial hair.

My question is: Is hormonal imbalance caused facial hair to women?

Thanks,

Cecil

My answer:

Actually, there are many types of hormonal imbalance. The hormonal imbalance that I was talking in the article that you recently read is the imbalance of hormones called progesterone and estrogen in women.

And yes, facial hair in women is caused by hormonal imbalance. But this time the hormones involved here is the testosterone.

To let you know, men and women both have the hormone “testosterone“. The testes of male and the ovaries of women are the ones responsible to the secretion of this hormones. And sometimes it is also secreted by the androgen glands.

However, the level of testosterone hormone in male is high compared to that of the female. Normally, in female, estrogen and progesterone are high in level.

So, once the level of testosterone in women is too high, women will experience the growth and development of facial hair because facial hair is one of the effects of testosterone in human’s body.

However, not at all times the cause of facial hair is the testosterone hormone imbalance problem. There are other causes of it like, poly cystic ovarian syndrome, heredity, and others.

So how to fix the hormonal imbalance?

The best way to check the hormonal imbalance is to visit and consult your gynecologist. Don’t believe on what the articles published in the internet because the advices contained with those articles might not be applicable to you.

It was reported that the DOH confirmed 2 cases of A(H1N1) infection here in Eastern Visayas, a 14-year-old high school student of the Philippine Science High School in Barangay Pawing Palo, Leyte; and a 44-year-old seaman from Catbalogan, Samar who had just arrived from Singapore.

The news about it scared some people here in our area especially that there are already confirmed A(H1N1) cases in Cebu and Bohol and now in Palo, Leyte.

I know that the strain of virus here in the Philippines is just mild and no death resulted by the AH1N1 infection that has been reported yet. But I still need to be careful.

To let you know, my immune system against cold and similar illnesses is weak.

Last month, just after my son born, my wife suffered tonsillitis which was caused by the ice cream we ate. Then after several hours, her sinus, and other parts of her respiratory system got infected too. So, she suffered from soar throat, sinusitis, and cough. But I knew that it was not A(H1N1) infection because she didn’t experienced muscle pain.

After 2 days, I also experienced the illness that my wife suffered. We’re just lucky that our son was not infected.

My baby and his mother are still in the hospital. My wife delivered our son through cesarean section (CS) last Friday at 2PM and has recovered and discharge from the hospital already. But my son, Carl Justine and a jaundice baby, is still taking the photo therapy.

Why in Cesarean Section?

Actually, we tried to escape from the CS way of delivering the baby because it’s expensive. Everyday since her 5th month of pregnancy, I brought her to a place where we could exercise. I imposed strict and proper diet for a pregnant. I was not exempted from these, that why I lost 10kgm of weight (from 90kgm down to 80kgm).

However, at 7AM of May 8, 2009, the baby had a bowel movement into the amniotic fluid. And it happened not only once but 4 times.

At 10PM, I decided and told the OB-Gyne that the CS should be done immediately. But since my wife was induced at 7AM, so the doctor set the time for CS delivery at 12Noon giving us the chance to avoid the CS if ever my wife’s cervix would dilate from 4cm to 9cm before 12Noon.

But 12Noon came and the cervix is still at 4cm dilation. So, we have no other choice but to undergo the CS delivery.

Jaundice Baby?

At 2PM of May 8, 2009, my wife and our baby were safe already but my baby needed to take shots of antibiotics because of the fact that he already had his bowel movement while inside the womb of his mother.

But on the next day, May 9, 2009, I noticed that the baby has been turning into yellow.

Our baby’s doctor explained that the jaundice was the result of the incompatibility of the blood of my wife and our baby. My wife’s blood is type O while my baby’s blood is similar to mine which is type B+. This incompatibility caused the production of a substance (I forgot the name) that made our baby looks yellow.

According to the doctor, we have nothing to worry about this. But we couldn’t bring our baby home if the discoloration continue to be worsen.

The baby has been given a continues shots of antibiotics while taking the photo therapy.

A Blogging Juice?

No! Carl Justine is not a blogging Juice. He’s not a Toyota Fortuner that I dreamed of. He’s not like a Honda XRM Motorcycle that I bought through my blogging income. The things that blogging bought me couldn’t be compared to my son. But I can’t deny the fact that the money I used to pay the bills in the hospital and to buy the medicines and devices used in delivering my son is the money that blogging sent me.

As of writing this post, I already spent more or less 47,000PhP ($1,000 if at PhP47/$1 exchange rate). And I know, I will be spending more money for my son specially that he’s still in the hospital for the jaundice treatment.

I really thank you for your support. I also thank Yuga for the refund I received from him. And above all, thanks God for all his blessings.

How did I get that Photo of CJ?

After our wedding on June 20, 2008, my wife and I monitored her (my wife) menstrual cycle by recording the days of her menstruation. With this, I could estimate when would be her fertile period.

Why? Well, the fertile days of woman is the best time to perform sex not just to make sure that my wife would get pregnant but for our enjoyment too. Didn’t I tell you already that during that period, progesterone exist. And the progesterone hormone is responsible to the increase of the sex drive of the woman. Consider reading my article, “Hormonal Imbalance“.

Now, when we noticed that she missed the scheduled menstruation that should be on the last week of August 2008, we immediately did a pregnancy test and found out that she’s pregnant.

So, on the first week of September 2008 we immediately visited an OB-Gyne. Using the Doctor’s Ultrasound device, it was confirmed that my wife was really pregnant.

Since then we visited the OB-Gyne for the regular pre-natal checkup every month. The doctor used her Ultrasound device to check the status of the fetus as part of the monitoring of the development of the fetus.

I wanted to take photos of the fetus through the Ultrasound device but I was hesitant to do it knowing that the price for an Ultrasound exam was PhP700.00.

This afternoon during the prenatal of my wife, I talked to the doctor if I could take photos of my son through her Ultrasound device. The doctor agreed and did not even ask for a fee. So, while the doctor was checking our son using her Ultrasound, I was there taking photos of what had been shown on the Ultrasound device monitor.

In other words, that photo posted above was taken on the monitor of the Ultrasound device used by the doctor.

Another mother gives birth to 8 babies (octuplets) in US.

The six boys and two girls were delivered by caesarean section in Los Angeles, California.

The babies, who weighed in at between 1.8lbs (820g) and 3.4lbs each, are all said to be doing well.

They were screaming and kicking around very vigorously, according to a doctor at the hospital in suburban Bellflower.

The mother, whose identity has not been revealed, has asked that limited information be released about the births.

A hospital spokeswoman described the deliveries, which took place in the space of five minutes, as “truly amazing”.

Three of the babies – who were nine weeks premature – need help breathing, but all were otherwise doing well, she said.

Doctors say the babies will be in incubators for at least six weeks and that the mother is planning to breast feed them all.

Giving birth to several babies is just normal, I think. But what made me wonder is the fact that 3 of the 8 babies were nine weeks premature. Does it mean that these 3 babies were formed when their mother was nine weeks pregnant of the other 5?

If that’s what really happened, then it means that there is an abnormality in the hormones of that woman (just my thought). What I understand is that, normally if a woman is already pregnant, there would be something (may be a hormone) in the uterus that would prevent the spermcells in going inside the uterus from the vagina, or in another way, something would prevent the release of the eggcells, which in turns prevent more fertilization.

Formaldehyde is the simplest member of aldehyde family but it is very reactive chemical. Formaldehyde is soluble in water and when mix with water the solution is called formalin. In other words, the gaseous form is Formaldehyde and the liquid form is Formalin. However, Formalin is not at all time composed of Formaldehyde and water alone. Some manufacturer of Formalin added other alcohol substance to the solution of Formaldehyde and water.

Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling, irritating, poisonous, and flammable gas and its chemical formula is CH2O which is also called as Methanal. It is commonly produced by oxidation of Methanol.

Formaldehyde is used as disinfectant and preservative and used in the industry of textiles, plywood, papers, insulators, plastics, paints, etc.. The Formalin is widely used in embalming dead bodies.

Why are you writing about Formaldehyde and Formalin?

Actually, I just want to share you some thoughts about Formaldehyde or Formalin.

To let you know, every time we talk about the China Milk Scare or the China Melamine Scandal, we end up discussing about Formalin. It is because the Chinese businessmen were silently killing people by mixing melamine into their dairy products just to cheat the standard test of the government for dairy products, while Filipino fishermen and fish vendors are silently killing people by using Formalin in maintaining the freshness of the look of the fish they’re selling.

You see, Chinese businessmen cheated the standard test for dairy products using melamine, while Filipino fishermen used Formalin in cheating fish buyers. While melamine caused kidney stones, Formalin or Formaldehyde is considered carcinogen and is very irritating and poisonous chemical.

How did you know that fishermen and fish vendors are using formalin in preserving their fish?

Actually, some people here in Maasin City that I talked with told me that there are fishes being sold in the Maasin City Wet Market are preserved using Formalin. But these people who told me about it don’t have evidence to back up their accusation. What they told me is of course their conclusion based on the looks of the fishes.

Here’s why they concluded that some fishes were preserved using formalin:

Most of the large fishing boats that deliver tuna, shark and other big fishes here in Maasin City Wet Market stay at sea fishing for two weeks. That’s the reason why these fishing boats bring hundreds of kilograms of fishes here in Maasin. But in that length of time, fishes still look fresh. When the fishermen in those fishing boats were asked what they are using to preserve the fish, they would answer that they’re using sea water and ice.

Now, if it is really true that fishermen use sea water and ice in preserving the fishes for them to stay fresh for two weeks, then why is it that the eyes of the fishes were still fresh? Something weird, they told me.

In Barangay Ichon, Macrohon, Southern Leyte, I once saw a fish car with tuna fishes coming from Mindanao that were not soaked into the water with ice. These fishes were not even placed in the freezer but were just wrapped with papers. Remember that these fish cars were traveling from the place of their origin in Mindanao to Macrohon, Southern Leyte for several days. Fishes normally start to rot several hours after they died. Now, if these fish cars did not use any preservatives, then why is it that the fishes still looked fresh as they unloaded them from the fish cars? And if they’re really using preservative in preserving the fishes, then I’m sure that they were not using sea water and ice but a chemical.

What’s the problem with fish preserved using Formalin?

Well, eating fish with Formalin seems no effect at all especially if the Formaldehyde level you took is very minimal. But we should not forget that Formaldehyde is known as carcinogenic chemical. Carcinogenic means capable of causing cancer.

So, eating fish with formalin is like allowing cancer to grow in your body. And of course we don’t want to suffer from cancer.

How could we know if the fishes that we want to buy are preserved using Formalin?

Normally, fishes preserved with Formalin are stiff. They remain stiff even if you soak it in water for several hours or days. They also remain stiff even after you cooked them. The meat is rubbery. The scales are hard. The eyes look fresh and clear. The fishes do not have fishy odor. And the very obvious sign is that flies don’t go near with those fishes.

What is SIDS? This is a question sent to me by one of our readers.

SIDS stands for “Sudden Infant Death Syndrome” and it is define as the unexpected, sudden, and unexplained death of infants. It is also called the “Crib Death” or “Cot Death”.

The affected infants actually do not have any illness, or in other words, these babies are healthy. Most of the deaths according to “healthlibrary.epnet.com” happen between two and four months of age, and affected babies mostly are sleeping.

What is the cause of SIDS?

Actually the cause of SIDS is unknown yet. Deaths actually happen without any symptoms, especially that babies affected mostly are sleeping. However, some expert considered the air that the affected babies were breathing might be one of the causes of SIDS.

Consider this information from the New York Times about SIDS:

SIDS is most likely to occur between 2 and 4 months of age, and 90% occur by 6 months of age. It occurs more often in winter months, with the peak in January. There is also a greater rate of SIDS among Native and African Americans.

The following factors increase the risk of SIDS:

Babies who sleep on their stomachs

Babies who sleep in the same bed as their parents

Babies who have soft bedding in the crib

Multiple birth babies

Premature babies

Babies with a sibling who had SIDS

Mothers who smoke or use illegal drugs

Teen mothers

Short time period between pregnancies

Late or no prenatal care

Situations of poverty

How to prevent SIDS?

Since we are not really sure of the causes of SIDS, so we don’t know also how to prevent it. However, a result of a study of SIDS suggested that rebreathing the Carbon Dioxide might be one of the causes of SIDS. So, to prevent the risks in rebreathing the Carbon Dioxide, they suggested to circulate the air using fans. The fans of course do not cool the air but they only let the air move, therefore, giving the babies the chance to breath fresh Oxygen.

I hope my answer helps.

What is Melamine?

Melamine is an organic compound used to produce melamine resin by combining it with (embalming chemical) formaldehyde.

Melamine Resin is a kind of plastic which is characterized by its hardness and durability and it can withstand fire and heat up to 140 degree centigrade.

Melamine is also used in the production of the firefighter’s suit and garments and car racers suit. Garments of this kind do not easily catch fire and also resist heat, thus, making the firefighters and car racers safe when engaged in firefighting and during car racing accidents, respectively.

Melamine is widely used in manufacturing of kitchen melamine wares such as plates, plastic spoon and fork, bowl, etc. I am still wondering if Tupper Ware ® products are made up of melamine because they have the qualities of melamine products such as:

Durability. It is resistant to breaking and cracking.

Heat Resistance. It can be used to hold hot food and help the food to stay warm for a longer time.

Free from Germs

Harmful Chemical resistance. It doesn’t react with other chemicals.

Stain Resistance.

Fade proof.

In general, Melamine can be used in decorative laminates, arminoplastics, adhesive agents, coatings and used as a paper-reinforcing agent, textile auxiliaries, cement water-reducing agent and leather retaining agent, etc. The Wikipedia listed the following as the products which are manufactured with the use of Melamine:

Countertops

Dry erase boards or White Boards

Fabrics

Glues

Housewares

Flame retardants

Inks

Plastics

Fertilizers

Why is it included in food and milk?

Manufacturers of food and milk that added Melamine to their products are actually cheaters. Melamine is not food but chemical that has high Nitrogen content and no other nutritional value. Just like what you noticed on the list of products made from Melamine, they are not food to eat but things that are used in our homes, offices, and other establishments.

As what you have known already, the authorities set the standard protein content of food or milk. The standard tests estimate the protein level of the product by measuring the Nitrogen level of it.

Take note, that the Nitrogen level is actually the one being measured. Since Melamine is high in Nitrogen, so cheaters use Melamine in increasing the Nitrogen level of their products so that the product will pass the standard test for the protein content.

Death and illness caused by Melamine

You’ve heard from the recent news that lots of milk and other dairy products manufactured in China are being recalled from the stores, and few personalities are arrested, and thousands of babies in China suffered kidney failure and few of them died already. These are all because of Melamine mixed in milk and other dairy products manufactured in China.

According to the experiments made, Melamine alone has no effect (toxic) to the living organisms. But Melamine Cyanurate can cause kidney illness and failure.

Melamine Cyanurate is a kind of salt that is formed when Melamine and Cyanuric Acid are combined. It is used as fire retardant.

Since, those affected babies in China showed symptoms similar to the effect of Melamine Cyanurate, so it was concluded that the Melamine in the Milk content caused those illnesses.

If you’ll review my “About” page, you’ll find out that one of my dreams is to own a website that receives 1,000,000 or 1M unique hits a day. This dream leads me to think too much of many things that might help me succeed. And the bad thing is, overthinking is always the cause of the rising of my blood pressure.

However, based on the news report that I read today, overthinking has positive effect too. The news report said:

Thinking too much about family and work troubles might turn out to be a good thing, Israeli researchers say.

People who tend to overthink things might be protecting themselves from Alzheimer’s, according to their research presented at the International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease, at McCormick Place.

If this report is true, then I will be saved from Alzheimer’s. Yeah! I will never suffer Alzheimer’s especially if I’ll die early because of hypertension or heart attack.
