Moshin Naqi’s post, “5 Ways to Overcome Blogging Shyness and Be More Productive,” reminds me of my old self.

1o years ago, I had no face to face other people thinking that they would criticize me and thought negatively about me. Moshin’s descriptions about a shy one are all true: “Shyness is characterized by fear, self-doubt, and lack of confidence. A shy person, in real life, would fear mingling with other people, lock himself in his room, and would try his mightiest to hide his shortcomings from others.”

The way my mother used me in teaching her grade 1 pupils at Buhisan Primary School (San Agustin, Surigao del Sur, Philippines) changed me. I know already how to read and how to write when I was still 4 years old without attending any formal education. My mother was teaching at that time 3 grades, that is, from grade 1 to grade 3. Everyday, at 4 in the afternoon, my mother told me to teach her grade 1 pupils to read and write, according to her instructions.

If I was not trained my mother in that way, I think, I will stay shy just like what my older sister is.

Now, back to Moshin’s post, she gave 5 ways to overcome blogging shyness:

Stop blogging like a shy one. Usually, he who portrays somebody other than himself when blogging is shy and doesn’t want to show the real he to his readers. Now, to change what you really are, you need to start blogging just like what you are. Be honest to your readers. Tell them what you hate, what you like and anything about the real you.

Tell your readers what you feel. I think, this is related to what I said above. Now, tell your readers about the things you hid inside you. Yes! Moshin’s refer it as your secrets.

“Turn your shyness into excitement.” Actually, I can hardly explain this. Let us just consider Moshin’s explanation about it which says: “While writing a post, you remember a personal anecdote of falling into a street gutter. Your adrenaline starts flowing because of embarrassment and you are forced to craft a fake version of that anecdote. You tell your readers that your friend fell into the gutter while you watched him. Now, since you are kind of feeling guilty about being dishonest to your readers, you’ll probably leave a clue for your readers that your anecdote is all made up (shy people are not very good at being shy) So, why not relate the anecdote as it really happened and let your adrenaline pump some excitement into it? It’s even more exciting to see people laugh at your ‘cuteness’.“

Express your real opinion. Don’t be afraid that your readers will laugh at you or criticize your ideas. Just tell your readers what’s your opinion. If their opinion go against yours, remain firm on your side. Just like what Moshin has said, “why’d you care as long as you know you are right?“

Don’t be conscious enough. Don’t be afraid if you portray yourself at your blog like you’re bad guy. For your information, some of the Filipino bloggers call me idiot, dumb or whatever, but it didn’t made me stop blogging. Why not try like what I did?

These ways can be applied into yourself not just in blogging, but also in the real world. If you think, you got the characteristics as described by Moshin as “Shyness is characterized by fear, self-doubt, and lack of confidence. A shy person, in real life, would fear mingling with other people, lock himself in his room, and would try his mightiest to hide his shortcomings from others.“… then consider these 5 ways to help you change yourself.

I went closer and told the doctor, “You have a nice cat, doc.” The doctor answered, “Oh! Sel… I enjoyed playing my cat with this toy.” He showed the plastic fish to me and said, “Yesterday morning, I fed this cat with a real fish. The cat immediately eat the fish alive. In the afternoon, I made this toy smell like a real fish and give it to the cat, but the cat didn’t responded. He only threw a weird look into this toy, and then after a while the cat played it.

I only smiled at him to show my agreement with him.

“Now I realized,” the doctor continued, “that cats are really intelligent. We couldn’t fool them. They knew if the food we fed them is real or not.”

“Yes doc. Cats are really intelligent.” I agreed. “They’re even smarter than you doc. Cat’s didn’t study to learn what’s the real fish and what’s not, isn’t it? And you studied several years just to earn the title and profession as a Doctor, but then you didn’t noticed that the one you are kneeling and praying to is just an idol.”

The doctor blushed and wanted to say something to me, but then I continued, “if I will bring you a piece of wood and told you to kneel down before it and pray, would you do that doc? I think you would not do it instead you would say, ‘am I fool to do it?’ But if I will form that wood into Sto. Niño and bring it to you and tell you to kiss it, kneel before it and pray, I think you’ll do it sincerely, isn’t it?”

Then I got my Bible and said, “You know doc, it was already written on the Scriptures…”

13 The carpenter measures with a line
and makes an outline with a marker;
he roughs it out with chisels
and marks it with compasses.
He shapes it in the form of man,
of man in all his glory,
that it may dwell in a shrine. (Isaiah 44:13, NIV)

19 No one stops to think,
no one has the knowledge or understanding to say,
“Half of it I used for fuel;
I even baked bread over its coals,
I roasted meat and I ate.
Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left?
Shall I bow down to a block of wood?” (Isaiah 44:19,NIV)

“You see doc? You’re at the peak of your education but then you never realized that half of that Sto. Nino was used to cook food and to other purposes, and you bow and pray before it.

“Christ’s told us that worshipping God should be done in Spirit and in Truth,

24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24, NIV)

not through the images. I wish you’ve learn a lesson from your cat doc.”

Last night, I was playing a Random Bible Verse Reading, when I accidentally opened the Book of Proverbs and read the verse 5 of the Chapter 10 which goes:

5 He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,
but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son. (NIV)

From this verse, it was differentiated the two sons: First is the wise son and the disgraceful son. While reading that verse, I actually got interested on knowing who the disgraceful son is. Anyway, it is already clear from that verse alone, that the disgraceful son is the one who sleeps during harvest. In other words, he is a lazy man… the sluggard:

09How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?

10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest- (Proverbs 6:9-10, NIV)

He is the one who wanted nothing but to sleep and get a long rest, which resulted to:

31 thorns had come up everywhere,
the ground was covered with weeds,
and the stone wall was in ruins. (Proverbs 24:31, NIV)

In the other way, sluggard can be identified if his farm or home looks like what has been described above.

Do you think he wanted this to happen? No. He only lacks judgment that’s why these things happened.

30 I went past the field of the sluggard,
past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; (Proverbs 24:30, NIV)

In New King James Version, it is said that the man like this is devoid of understanding:

30 I went by the field of the lazy man,
And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; (Proverbs 24:30, NKJV)

Did you know what comes next if a man will not change himself from being lazy? According to the Bible, poverty will come like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.

34 and poverty will come on you like a bandit
and scarcity like an armed man. (Proverbs 24:34, NIV)

I think, this is what most of the Filipinos have experienced nowadays.

If you are one of those men that are said to be sluggard, God has this advice:

7 “But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; (Job 12:7, NIV)

You should ask the animals and birds and they will tell you what to do, including ants:

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise! (Proverbs 6:6, NIV)

Observed the activities of ants and then according to the Bible, be wise. Put it in your mind that ants although have no commander, they work hard and gather food for them.

7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,

8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest. (Proverbs 6:7-8, NIV)

So… Do you want to avoid poverty and scarcity? Observe the ants, reflect, learn and apply what you’ve learn to your life.
