Microbes Digest Gas not Oil
A team of scientists who studied the bacterias exist in the gulf of Mexico published their finding in the journal science revealing that bacteria digest gas not oil.
The team led by David L. Valentine, a professor of microbial geochemistry at UC Santa Barbara, conducted research for ten days in June in gulf of Mexico where the oil spill from the BP’s raptured oil well. Their observation said that while the level of propane and ethane gas declined, bacteria at the same time grew.
The team also observed other chemical changes and their study suggest that the bacteria called Cycloclasticus, Colwellia and Oceanospirillaceae were eating natural gas that led also to the decline of Oxygen in the gulf.
However, the team said that there are still possibility that these bacteria would digest oil components too.
