Here in the Philippines, nobody cares about Phil Wood although his invention is widely used by bicycle, and other mechanical devices.

Phil Wood died by Pancreatic Cancer in Roseville at the age of 86.

But who is Phil Wood anyway?

Well, Phil Wood was a mechanical engineer who invented a bicycle hub which is characterized as with high-performance and low-maintenance.

Prior to Wood’s invention, hub is actually a ball bearings placed in a cup and held in line by a pressed-in cone but it loosened easily.

When Phil Wood took up bicycle racing at San Jose’s velodrome, he became frustrated by wheels that quickly became wobbly. He had to clean and repack the ball bearings with grease after every race. During that time, he realized that there is a need to invent a hub that doesn’t need maintenance at all.

His invented a grooved hub in which ball bearings could be held in precisely by a screw-on cap. With this kind of hub and bottom bracket the lubricants is kept in while the water and grime are kept out.
