A group of independent scientist proposes to study the oil spill in the gulf of Mexico.

BP (British Petroleum) the operator of the oil rig that sank after an explosion that caused the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is currently trying to kill the runaway well. And before they successfully have done that, the scientists want to perform a large scale study of the spill in order to answer the following questions:

  • Where the oil and gas are going to?
  • What area will have the most damage?
  • How the oil and gas move if they’ll be released at high volumes in the deep area?
  • How the oil become toxic or safe components in different conditions?
  • What species will be at risk most?

The group is led by Ira Leifer, a researcher at the Marine Science Institute of the University of California. The research will take two weeks and will cost $8.4 million using two research vessels and a robotic vehicle.

The result of the study will be used in future oil spill.
