Successful Overnight Flight Test by a Solar-Powered Plane
A solar-powered airplane ended its more than 26 hours over night test flight by landing at Payerne airfield near Lake Neuchatel, Switzerland, today at 9 a.m. local time.
The plane which was made of carbon fiber was piloted by Andre Borschberg in a height of 8,500 meters and at the speed of 70 kilometer per hour. It is equipped with 12,000 solar cells arranged on its 61 meters wingspan that collects solar energy and then charge the lithium batteries that drives the motors of the plane.
The flight is part of the project led by the Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard and Borschberg, a former fighter pilot of Switzerland, which was financed by Deutsche Bank AG. The project is aimed to circle the globe by using the solar power and so far, the experiment proves that a plane can fly around the clock without worrying of its fuels.
