In 1946 to 1948, American doctors intentionally infected 700 Guatemalans who are prison inmates, mental patients and soldiers with syphilis (venereal disease) as part of their experiment to test the effectiveness of the penicillin against such kind of disease.

The subject Guatemalans did not give direct consent to join the studies. It’s the authorities however who signed them in.

Authorities from the Italian Financial Police seized $30 million from a Vatican bank account, Monday and investigated two top bank officials. According to the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, it started when the Bank of Italy told authorities about the possible violation of the Vatican Bank of the anti-money laundering laws.

The Vatican is said to have asked the Credito Artigiano to carry out two wire transfer without providing enough information regarding the transfer to comply with the law. The two wire transfers are: (1) $ 26 million for the JP Morgan in Franfurt and another (2) $4 million for the Banca del Fucino.

Today, the ABS-CBNNews reported that our government is developing a low-cost computer tablet that can be owned at around $70. This move is said to make Filipinos more competitive in science and technology and at the same time, giving ease to students for the heavy text books will be replaced by digital books that can be read by using the said tablet.

But my questions is: Is the price of $70 just right for the said tablet? India’s own low-cost tablet is priced at $35 only and I guess government officials are fond of overpricing just like what they did in the fertilizer scam, and the most recent is the DEPED’s noodle scam.
